Chris has vast experience in driver training both as an advanced driving instructor and driving examiner. He covered over a million miles of high speed police advanced driver training at the world famous Metropolitan Police Motor Driving School Hendon. He also gave driving instruction to Prince William and Prince Harry in preparation for their 'L' driving test. This is the third in the Ultimate Driving Craft series of high quality advanced driving DVDs which have received international acclaim having sold to 39 countries. Filmed with two HD professional movie cameras and professionally edited by Green Gecko Television Ltd who have also added some excellent animation to support Chris's teaching of driving skills. Picture-in-Picture views are used throughout much of your viewing. In this DVD Chris highlights a problem that affects all drivers. It is called the natural focal point and not the best way to drive. He explains what it is, why it happens and what we, as drivers, can do about preventing it. Chris also explains, supported by animation, how you can improve your judgement of speed and distance. There is a Central London drive and highlights of a 6 hour Hendon Advanced Car Course route through 5 counties all with a detailed running commentary. Total run time 140 minutes on two DVDs for best viewing quality.

My other big takeaway from the first disc was his point that really good observation leads to a relaxed and unrushed drive, where you always feel calm and in control. That's something I would like to achieve, especially around junctions, and being able to see how he approaches them helps me get my head around how to do it myself, which is at least a first step! I think I will watch this video quite a few times before I feel I have picked up all I have to learn from it.
Finally I found the London drive really fascinating. In part this is because it's my old stamping ground and I loved seeing familiar sights, but mostly because it is great to see these techniques applied in a city situation. so many advanced driving clips show people rushing along quiet country lanes, but that's not where most of us live and drive.
One of the best "side issue" features of these videos is the willing admission of Chris Gilbert's own failings, and this perhaps merely adds to the respect he has earned. As always, with such an emotive subject, there will be differences of opinion, but Mr Gilbert successfully deals with issues.
I suppose one very valuable lesson learned is that everyone makes mistakes, but a try advanced driver may make only minor mistakes (major though to him or her), and has the ability to tell when maybe on occasions his/her driving falls short of the normal high standard. The ability to recognise these times gives the ability to correct.
All in all, a very good pair of videos, and good value.
