First off, I have tried multiple versions of running backpacks and belts, and I have never found the perfect solution. I think this may be it. Though I was never a boy scout, I sort of take the "be prepared" approach to a long run -- especially trail runs. I discovered, though, that I do not like running with a pack. It just feels odd to me. The problem, though was that most of the belts I looked at did not provide sufficient storage options. This belt does.
I can pack all my food, chews, first aid, etc. in the front pockets -- utilizing the zipped and unzipped pockets. Then I can also cram a very light rain/wind jacket in that back zippered pocket. The bungee cords make that a little difficult, but it'll fit. I have not yet used the bungees to strap anything else on because I haven't needed to. I find the extra storage in the back to be very important for colder weather races when I might need to take extra clothing or find a place to store clothing I've shed.
Finally, there are two bottle pockets. I ordered the belt without the bottles because I already had a couple of the soft bottles from a UD backpack. Given that the bottles are 500 mL each, I really don't need both on most runs -- even if aid stations are very far apart. So if I run with only one, that frees up yet another storage area if needed.
My only issue is not an issue with the belt at all, rather I'm not sure I like the soft bottles. I like drinking from them, but I have a really hard time getting them out of the pockets while running. Furthermore, you have to secure them well or they will "jump" out of the pockets. Maybe I just haven't mastered the art of using them yet, or maybe I should try a different bottle. Regardless, I really, really, really like this belt! My running buddy from work saw it one a trail half marathon we were doing and he was so impressed he bought one himself.
I decided on the Amphipod Low-Profile 12 oz bottle as they are hard-sided and slid in and out of the holster easily. 24 ounces of water is a little more than I need as I rarely run farther than five miles but they fit well. I haven’t looked but I’m sure that Ultimate Direction makes bottles that size. Their drinking valves are great.
My iPhone 8 in a Lifeproof case fits well in the front pocket along with keys in the zipper pouch. The back pocket carries a pack off baby wipes and Body Glide perfectly.
Unless you’re running really far or can refill your bottle every several miles, this is a great item.
