I was pleasantly surprised by this film. I'm not usually a big fan of Ben Affleck (Pearl Harbor put me off!), but he is very good in this. The story is set in a rough neighbourhood, following the tale of a group of bank robbers. One of them (Affleck) is starting to develop a conscience and becomes involved with a woman who could be a potential witness. Meanwhile the FBI are busy hunting the gang down.

The real strength of the film lies in the relationships between the characters. Affleck is reasonably convincing as a robber starting to change his mind, and his love interest is sweet and naive and fails to spot that there is anything shady about him. Affleck's loyal but aggressive sidekick is played particularly well by Jeremy Renner, and the long-standing history between his character and Affleck's is portrayed exceptionally well. Interestingly, I found myself feeling some sympathy for the robbers - the idea that some people get stuck in a role they are expected to play was a strong theme of the film.

This is not a straightforward action film, nor even just a cat and mouse chase with the FBI, but more an examination of the people within the situation. That said, there are some very good action sequences too, some real suspense and excitement, and some strong violence and language. Really liked it - thought provoking and absorbing.

Great film that did not get the level of recognition it deserved when it first came out. Engaging story, brilliant cast. It would be hard to pick out just one or two performances as they're all stellar, Affleck, Renner, Postlethwaite, Lively, Hamm, Hall, Cooper. It has darkness and grit and light and hope. It's fun and action packed. The quality of the script and the acting enables it to pack a punch.

This is top viewing and defo worth a squizz. I'd say
it was a cross between The FBI murders, Heat, Point Break and
Catch me if you Can.

Ben Affleck sure does deliver a good viewing experience that
gets better as the films goes along. Just enough of every
type of scene and fast paced action to not over-do any
one particular aspect of the movie. Meaning the balance
seems just right. The story is plausible, realistic and the
feel of it suits the style it's made in. This is present day,
not a hark back to old heist movies, gangsters or an expose
on previous local criminals.

The Amazon reviewer asks if Ben Affleck is too 'clean-cut' to play a
low life bank robber, murderer and criminal?? Maybe, but he's still
plausible, hard faced enough, arrogant and believable
and carries it off - for me the test is always
when you say, so and so would have been better in that role,
so when no one else immediately springs to mind, then that's
proof that the lead castings were correct or as good as anyone
else you could have picked. Although, personally, I think
Clive Owen would have been a lot more convincing as the FBI agent.
John Hamm comes across as clever, knowledgeable and conniving as
the criminal, but he lacks the ego, the harder edge of Pacino,
and guttural intensity. After all Macray gets away.

Rebecca Hall does he best to impersonate Madeline Stowe of
years gone by. She has exactly the same look and style. I'd
have liked to have seen Pete Postlethwaithe get more screen
time as well tho, but he maybe have been too ill. And we
don't get to really know Magloan (Driver) that well either.

But what I liked best was the setting and location.

Ben Affleck takes a gamble every time he gets behind the camera as director: there are a lot of people looking for an excuse to knock him down for anything from being one half of 'Bennifer' to some pretty awful rom-co roles. So he doesn't cut himself any slack by taking on heavy duty serious thrillers like 'Gone Baby Gone' and this. Luckily he's a good director, and he shows off some pretty decent acting chops as Doug MacRay, the leader of a gang of bank robbers who all originate from a 1 square mile of Boston called 'The Town'. It's an area notorious with the Feds for breeding career criminals, and Doug's crew are no different until his insane right hand man James (Jeremy Renner) breaks the routine and takes a hostage during a getaway. Fearing she might be able to ID the gang despite their masks, the gang want to check if she knows anything, but Doug makes the mistake of getting engaged in conversation and drawn into her world.
In a world where the FBI are hungrily pursuing the gang and will apply pressure to any lead, Boston's criminal lords want another big score out of the gang, and James is convinced the girl's a danger, that's a potentially lethal mistake.
The Town convinces with some great area detail and nicely played roles with thick Boston accents. Affleck is believable as a medium-level criminal with only slightly better-than-average intellect, and Renner is frightening as James with his fiery instability and predatory instincts.
The script is played terrifically, and has a frighteningly tense verbal showdown which unfolds in a scene where one of the characters is utterly oblivious to the danger that could explode around them any second. It's a masterpiece moment that deserves to be up there amongst the best tension sequences of the year.
