It's great to hear SDJ in full flow on this compilation,..most of his well known songs are here, personally I wish they'd included, 'The Rhythmn of Life' but everyone has a favourite omitted from a compilation album I'm sure,..this is as good as you can get if you admire the snappy, jazzy, finger-clicking legendary showman's style. The 'live' numbers are particularly effective, which of course is where he was at his most magnetic. My favourite here has to be the 'Me and my shadow' duet with Frank Sinatra. .. Now this isn't a criticism, but one interesting vocal idiosyncracy I've only just noted is Mr Davis's pronunciation of the letter 'D'.,..he doesn't do them!,..it's most noticable in 'If I ruled the World',..which in his hands becomes 'If I ruled the Worl'!,..check it out,..weird, but he's no less great a performer for it. Co-incidentally, he walked right past me 30 years ago and two things struck me,.firstly, how short he was,..and secondly the magnetism and charisma the guy oozed,..a true star and a talent of which we won't see the like again. Play and enjoy. RIP Sammy!

When Sammy Davis Jnr, Sings, Dances or just performs even now many years after his death he can do no wrong in my eyes. I LOVE HIM!!. He is absolutely fantastic and I Miss his presence in this world. We need his talent. I truly believe that he was underestimated and wish there were more CD's and DVD's of him singing the songs of today wow that would be something. Still I don't mind reviewing what he did in his lifetime. You just cannot better his performance. He was better than Frank Sinatra, (although to be fair they were very different performers and each has his place in history) Sammy Davis Jnr just didn't have the publicity, money or Clout behind him as Old Blue Eyes. I think Sammy Davis Jnr is Superlative, Brilliant and Wonderful. Bring him On!!

This CD has 25 songs, by USA and UK writers, spanning from 1955 (mono sound) through the 1960's (stereo sound) mainly on the Reprise label with BIG band backing, the latest track is from 1977, a live performance of With A Song In My Heart.
The sound quality is atleast good with most tracks being very good or better. SD's performances are the tops, up there with other great interpreters of swing like Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra.
I bought this CD for very little from an Amazon shop, thoroughly recommended.

Honestly, I was a little disappointed with this CD. I watched a documentary on Sammy recently and one guy said he constantly told him to use his own style and not to try and be like Sinatra. Listening to this I have to say that there are times when Sammy tries too hard to be quirky with his vocal style and while there is no doubt that he could certainly belt out a tune, the quirkyness feels forced and doesn't always suit his style.

When Sammy Davis Jr is good he is very good but it doesn't happen enough here. This collection doesn't even include the fantastic Mr Bojangles which is an alarming mistake.
