I targeted the feeding station in the front garden, since it is right outside my window. What I saw, was incredible - terrifying even, in a Tippi Hedren kind of a way. One starling, motoring through these mealworms like the winner of an eating competition. Followed by another starling, and then another. Within five minutes I had a small flock outside, all arguing and shouting at each other. Great entertainment, even better than 'EastEnders' (mind you, that's not much of a recommendation). But personally scary, once it became apparent that their mealworms were running low. I could have just hidden under my desk and waited for them all to leave of course, but one or two of them had made eye-contact with me by then. There was one particularly gobby one, I managed to stare him down. But that was when they unleashed their Plan B. They brought the kids. A gorgeous, but surprisingly loud, baby starling, whose sole aim was apparently to stand outside my window shouting noisily for mealworms until either his parents cracked or I did.
Predictably enough, it was me that gave in first. Whereupon, we went through the entire episode all over again. Well, up to the point where they started all their scare tactics; I was locked in the smallest room by then. For 'safety', you understand.Read more ›

A nice big bag of mealworms which my robin and sparrows love. A tub would be easier but I expect that would put the cost up. Good valuePublished on 19 Dec. 2013 by bookaday

My birds love these, I put some out every day in a tray attached to the bird feeder and it's nice to see the variety of birds that come to feed.Published on 7 Sept. 2013 by Mrs. J. A. Archer
These are expensive and best for use in the winter when they will attract blackbirds and robins to the garden. Unfortunately jackdaws and crows also like them!Published on 2 Aug. 2013 by Richard Stevenson
