As wireless, in-ear headphones go these are excellent value for the price, and a steal at the price I paid (£29.99 with voucher).
They are heavy enough to feel substantially built, yet light enough to wear comfortably.
I don't want them for exercise so can't speak about using them for jogging and so on, but for general use as cordless headphones they are more comfortable, and cooler, than over ear models and fit better than most of the myriad of in-ear models I have had over the years.
Three sizes of silicon tips are included so it is a question of finding the best fit. It takes a few attempts to work out the technique of inserting the earphone then twisting to lock them in place, lock perhaps being an overstatement, but once you work it out the earphones are secure enough for walking around and moving about which neatly gets over the first hurdle faced by wireless in-ear headphones - individual earpieces falling out whenever you move.
As for sound, the noise cancelling function works well. It is perhaps not quite as effective as you find on a good over ear set of suitable headphones, but they do reduce external noise considerably, which is obviously more evident in noisy surroundings where there is more noise to cancel. It is a remarkable feat to achieve it in a unit so small.
There is little to no sound leakage when using them either so you are not going to annoy anyone nearby.
The sound itself is more than acceptable. I am sure hi-fi aficionados will find weaknesses and faults, but for listening to speech, music, films and general audio from a computer or phone they are a vast improvement on built in speakers and have a good tonal range.
The bass is powerful and rich, the high notes are clear and not shrill or tinny and the midtones are full and well rounded.
These are from speakers smaller than a 5p piece so you can hardly expect to get Acoustic Energy floor standing quality. A full blown even moderately expensive hi-fi system, my own Denon for example, has more subtlety, depth and richness in tone but that really isn’t what you are likely to be after, nor indeed should you be with in-ear speakers.
These do the job they were designed for extremely well, producing a quality of sound which belies their size, so, what you get are decent speakers which faithfully reproduce the source audio, are easy to listen to and have no annoying sound traits or foibles. I have tried them on rock, pop, classical and musicals and they have behaved themselves each time.
People who like the walls to shake to music might want a bit more volume, but they are more than loud enough at full volume for most people and, importantly, show no signs of distortion.
I have only used the telephone function once and could hear the caller and they could hear me clearly. To be honest it is not a function I am likely to use that often so the fact it worked and the quality was acceptable, and is there if I need it, is good enough for me.
The units work for a decent time, six hours is claimed, and they charge from the tiny case when not in use, extending use between mains charges to more than 24 hours. I don’t use them every day and only for a couple of hours or so at a time usually, which means they last quite a few days between charges for me.
The case, incidentally, has a fast charge function with a USB C socket – make sure that you are using a fast charge plug for the function to work though. A ten minute charge gives one hour playtime on fast charge.
On the question of charging, by the way, the first thing to do is remove the plastic film over the connecting terminals, something not mentioned in the instructions. The film is well fitting and not easy to spot if you don't know it is there. Improves the charging and run time no end!
The Ugreen HiTune X6 are at the higher end of the budget price range, but the quality and build is well above what you would expect for the money. They are not the best on the market, but they don’t claim to be, pay out more and you might find some subtle improvements, pay out a lot more, 10 times plus at the top end, and you may well find the sound is starting to approach audiophile pleasing levels, but it all depends upon what you want.
If you are looking for and are happy with well made, attractive in-ear phones in a small unobtrusive case, with decent sound, effective noise cancelling and the ability to receive calls, all controlled by a simple tap, then these fit the bill admirably. All in all, you will be hard pressed to beat the Ugreen HiTune X6 at the price.
