    In summary, the best advice I can give you is to download the latest driver installation software from Prolific and use it to install the latest driver. If you then still have a problem, uninstall the driver and reinstall with 'run as administrator' selected.

    I bought this as an upgrade to another brand that used an earlier Prolific PL2303 chipset that worked well on Windows 7. However, on both versions of Windows 10 I had problems with installation.

    With Windows 10 Home it performed an automatic installation of the driver and looked like it had generated a viable COM port. However, when I tried using the Chipset Checking application it couldn't detect the type of PL2303 chip in use.

    With Windows 10 Pro I found that the driver did not automatically install. Even after downloading and installing the latest driver from Prolific manually, it was still listed in Device Manager as an 'Other device' without a driver. Looking at the error message available under the device properties in Device Manager gave me something to look for on the Internet. I eventually found that the device driver installation software needed to be 'run as administrator'. Once this was done the USB-RS232 adapter cable installed correctly when plugged-in. The Chipset Checking software identified the chipset as PL-2303GT.

    The driver version installed on the Windows 10 Pro PC was 5.1.3.0. On the Windows 10 Home PC the automatically installed driver version was 5.1.0.0. So I downloaded the latest driver installation software from Prolific and it installed the latest driver 5.1.3.0. This time, running the Chipset Checking software yielded the PL-2303GT chipset.

    Note that the Chipset Checking software is used to check that genuine Prolific chips have been used in the product and not counterfeit ones.

    It is functioning nicely as a means of controlling my NIR spectrometer via the spectrometer's parallel D25 serial connection, using a D25 to D9 serial adapter.

    My PC lacks the now scarce D9 serial port, so a USB to Serial D9 cable represents my only option. This Ugreen cable has a chip inside, in order for it to be recognised by Ubuntu 20.04 linux OS, which it is, natively.

    The NIR spectrometer software requires Windows XP or Windows 7 but a Virtualbox virtual machine (VM) runs both Windows OS's as guest OS's under Ubuntu 20.04 LTS host OS.

    This cable enables a serial connection on Virtualbox as serial host machine (not host pipe). Select the dummy guest Windows COM port, IRQ and address and save. Be sure to allow all users read access to the USB serial host device in a linux terminal, using: " sudo chmod 666 /dev/ttyUSB0".

    After setting up the VMs and configuring the serial connection it worked very well.

    I would have opted for a longer cable than the one metre length, had this been an option, but a Ugreen USB male to female extension cable privided the necessary reach from PC on my desk to table with NIR spectrometer.

    Overall a very useful cable indeed.

    I can only echo what others have said: It works, it works well, and it's really high quality.
    I'm using it with Windows 10, and have had no issues at all. Apparently it has a PL-2303 TA chip.
    And the presentation is great - really nice frustration-free packaging design, little driver CD, gold plated connection (Is that really necessary?), a protective cap over the USB connector (I've never even seen one of those before), even the little twisty-tie is nicer than the normal kind.
    Frankly I'd rather dispense with the luxury if it meant that I could pay less for a little cable that I'll never look at again after it's been installed, but Ugreen is fighting and uphill battle against the stereotype of cheap Chinese products, so I can't really blame them for going all out here.

    Works fine on Windows 10. I bought it to control a SkyWatcher telescope and that is just what it does. However I also want to use it with an older Vista laptop as I want the laptop outside and I will live with that system being occasionaly exposed to damp humid conditions. The drivers will not load on this system and although I had an email from Ugreen customer service telling how much they cared about their customers, emailing them about this brought absolutley no response hence 3 stars.
