RealMYST is a noble attempt by Cyan to update its popular adventure game Myst. The major change is the game's 3-D engine: it lets you walk around the island and the different ages in real time. The game also includes a new epilogue that links it to its sequel, Riven.
For the most part, RealMYST is exactly the same game as Myst. The puzzles are the same, and the books are the same. The major difference is the new 3-D engine which not only lets you move through the environments but also allows for the inclusion of animation in the otherwise static surroundings. Windmills turn, birds and butterflies dot the landscape, and the water flows realistically. Visually, the engine is superb. Everything looks great, and the water effects are especially noteworthy. Ripples form around pillars, and boats bob over waves.
Probably the biggest problem with RealMYST in general, is that the engine runs slowly. You'll find the game constantly dragging as the engine shudders under the weight of everything it's attempting to render. The problems exist even with the visuals set to the lowest quality. And playing the game at high resolutions is almost impossible, even on a relatively fast system.
With some serious updates to the engine, RealMYST would serve as a modern reminder that the original was an impressive game that was equally defined by both its fascinating detail and its original story. In its current form, RealMYST is suitable only as a novelty for fans of the original, who will want to see the new epilogue. You still have to listen to Atrus' speech at the end, but afterward you're given a new age to visit and some new puzzles. The epilogue serves as a more comprehensive link to Riven, though it's still somewhat open-ended and lacks the conclusiveness you want when a game is finished. It may be a novelty, but it's still a mostly worthwhile one for those who fondly remember Myst. --Ron Dulin, Amazon.comSee all Product Description

For the UK fans of the Myst series, this game has meant sheer tingles of delicious excitement ever since the very first information was announced, and we've all been patiently waiting for this masterwork to hit the shelves on this side of the Atlantic for far too long. And so the days of drooling into the keyboard as the teaser movie trailer plays on loop are now finally over. realMYST - the re-worked realtime 3D version of the original Myst - is here!
So it runs in realtime, which basically means it almost plays like Goldeneye007 or Quake - you can actually move around and look all over the place as freely as you like, slowly taking in the astoundingly beautiful and stunningly realistic environments of this fantastic game. It's like the 360' panning interface we saw in Myst III: Exile, only with the same freedom backwards and forwards, too. Original Myst gamers will delight at being able to sentimentally inspect objects more closely and see the same landscapes from hundreds of new and exciting angles - you obsessed people are all going to get a tremendous kick out of this. The original Ages of Selentic, Channelwood, Stoneship, Mechanical and D'ni are present as before, but in addition is one extra, named the 'Rimes Age', that serves as a stimulating reward for Myst addicts. The best part of this new way of playing is that it's so much simpler to understand where you are in the 3D space, unlike the old static image 'slideshow' point and click style of gameplay we had to learn to comprehend in the original Myst and Riven.Read more ›
Installed using Windows 98/me compatibility and run as administrator.
before configuring, advisable to install the following first. (freely available downloads)
The latest patch 1.2 - gives you more mouse control etc. Extract and overwrite the contents in the above program folder
Nglide from Zeus software, a freely available Glide (graphics) application that puts it's self in your Windows sysWOW64 folder. Locate the installed program and create a desktop shortcut for convenience purposes.
Create a shortcut on the desktop for the installed Real Myst setup program - found in the Real Myst program folder
Run the setup program only once to configure_ It is advisable to set the graphics to GLIDE and not your graphics adaptor. If the patch you installed earlier is working (patch 1.2); there will be a second tab to alter your mouse settings to your own taste.
Right click the desktop shortcut for Real Myst and set compatibility to Windows 98/me - hit the apply button (very important) and do the same again for select run as administrator. Hit Ok and exit
Finally run the Nglide application from the desktop shortcut and select your desired monitor resolution. Note it only works well here for monitors larger than 19 inches ; plus the graphics are far superior in rendering.
The game it's self is a huge classic and will keep all adventures happy for hours, plus you have full 360 degree movement.
To sum up: If you want a treasured collectable CD_ROM edition of a huge classic and run it on Windows 10 x64 Pro _ GO FOR IT ! (whilst they are still available)
