No run of the mill pop hagiography, this absorbing study of “the world’s biggest band” contains some fascinating material about their middle-class childhood in leafy Dublin, the genesis of their born again faith and how their street-savvy manager Paul McGuinness was crucial to their success.

Jobling is on the money in highlighting how they made a mint through brilliant corporate branding and copying the Rolling Stone’s business model. The many Spinal Tap escapades are also hilarious especially the naked shower fight between two band members over a pair of Y-fronts

Highly recommended whether you’re a U2 fan or not.

Just read this book cover to cover and have to say it is simply the best publication ever written on U2. It is clear the author has spent years researching the book, speaking to many of U2's closet associates from producers to road managers and the end result is nothing short of superb.

As publishers weekly and booklist have reported, it is a briskly paced saga that goes from their beginning to where they are now and reveals much about what went on while out on the road.

If you want a read that reveals the truth behind the band, then look no further than this wonderful book.

Absolutely comprehensive account of the Irish music giants that finds the truth behind the myth. U2 started off as an anthemic new wave band and ended up as one of the biggest brands in the business, with government ministers across the world begging for a photoshoot with Bono. How did this happen? Jobling digs into the gory details to tell the whole story, from provincial beginnings to "arch-capitalist" present. Anyone looking for a hagiography should look elsewhere. Truth-seekers won't be able to put it down.

I only read this book because it was recommended to me by a friend but I’m so glad I did. I really didn’t know very much about U2 but this is a terrific ‘warts and all’ account of the band’s history, from their shaky beginnings 40 years ago to their ultimate superstar status. It is a fascinating story, very well-written, and I couldn’t put it down.

Followers of U2 will know the musical history. What is really interesting is the personal background of the players. There are some really good descriptions of life in Ireland in the heady late 60s. Bono's reaction to his visit to famine-struck Ethiopia is also revealing. The dramatic visit to El Salvador, when they narrowly missed being bombed by the air force is shocking. In Berlin in 1990, at the time of reunification, they were innocents abroad. This is an entertaining account of a time unknown to today's young music lovers.

I enjoy rock n roll biographies, and this was a great read. I didn't know that they had grown up with a strong christian belief, but their ambition to become one of the biggest rock bands is evident. The band do have a sense of self-importance, but no doubt about their impact during the 80s and 90s. There also some funny stories around their hijinks after finding success, as you would hope!

A very comprehensive examination of the band, from their beginnings to the present - one might call it a biography of the band. While the author presents us with the band's development as a musical group, he also, interestingly, gives us the individual personalities and their life-stories. Their music is thus placed in the context of the individuals who make up the band, in the musical and cultural context of the Ireland in which they came of age as individuals and as musicians. The book offers an illuminating consideration of the band, any fan should read it, but it would also be valuable for anyone interested in how bands are created and survive the inevitable tensions of working together, as well as in the musical context of the last forty years. The author is not uncritical, however, and his ability to assess critically the band's current position and especially Bono's political presence on the world stage is an important aspect of the book. My one quibble is that, as someone who is of the U2 generation and grew up in their Ireland, the representation of Dublin as a bleak musical backwater is overstated.
