Product Description

Review

"When the authors of this lively, well-written and attractive survey of Tyneside history say 'earliest times', they really mean it . . . I would unreservedly recommend this to the general reader" (Northern Echo)

"Rich in anecdotes and fascinating facts" (The Journal)

"An ambitious undertaking and the first of its kind to tackle so much of the region's history . . . an accomplished book" (Morning Star)

From the Publisher

Tyneside bursts with pride - not a swaggering conceit but the most obvious, warm and pungent sense of civic pride in Britain. Tynesiders know who they are and everybody else does too. And yet there exists no comprehensive history of the place. Not since the middle of the nineteenth century has there been a detailed treatment of the remarkable story of how Tyneside was made and how it came to look, sound and behave the way it does. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

This is a fantastic book. Very, very readable & intensly addictive. Having watched the TV series with Ant & Dec (which was enjoyable, if a bit lacking in depth at times), I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. From the venerable Bede to the Romans, the Border Reivers & the incursions of the Scots, from commerce on the river to the rise & decline of the pits & the yards, it is a fast moving but fascinating narrative.

A good deal of Newcastle & Tyneside's civic "heroes" are here; Grainger, Stephenson, Buddle,Dobson et al & some less heroic (T.Dan Smith for example)- there's an array of famous North East names to be found within the pages of this book, describing their achievements & their historical context & importance.

This book is marvellous - it brings to life so much of our local history & describes how Tyneside has developed over the centuries.

If you love Tyneside & its history, you'll love this book.

It wasn't quite what I expected - it needs more photographs or diagrams interspersed with the text. The inserted sections were a bit confusing although informative. However a good introduction to the general history of the area.

A rattling good read and a pretty reliable and comprehensive history too. It must be quite a trick to balance all the different subject areas that one could include across such a long time period. That balance is admirably struck. And the writer weaves back and forth across the centuries into a seamless web of the very fabric of what it means to be a Geordie. One quibble - the author does not think Thomas Bewick was a great artist and accords him barely a mention. What???? It must have been his engraving of the guinea pig he was looking at. Please don't judge TB so rashly. I can recommend Jenny Uglow's wonderful biography to put his reputation straight.

This is a readable and interesting book - inevitably a bit superficial given the very big subject. But I especially appreciated the fascinating pre history section. I spotted a few innacuracies (Rainhill described as near Birmingham is about 90 miles from that city, although only 10 from Liverpool!)- I hope that there were not more that I did not pick up. But an enjoyable read.
