The author of this memoir is my mother and I have been helping her edit and revise this book for the past 18 months (typos are all my fault and I apologize to those who purchased earlier editions with them still in it).
I have come to know the text very well and really appreciate its wit and readability. I think this memoir of one of the most important times in my mother's life is a very enjoyable read and anyone who has traveled, or desires to travel, will enjoy it immensely. I recommend it strongly with the utmost bias a loving son can have.

In March 1954, two young Australian girls set out on what became a five-year travelling adventure across Europe and North America. This book details the first 6 months of that adventure as they arrive in Naples, Italy, and begin to get a feel for how to get around. Using their thumbs for rides they venture across Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain, Portugal, and Morroco, leading a life on the road that is far removed from what they left behind in Sydney. This is a heartfelt memoir of a form of traveling that has all but disappeared. The book recalls the numerous adventures and encounters Peggy and her traveling companion Jane had all across western and southern Europe, experiencing the warmth and kindness of strangers that make thumbing a ride such a rewarding form of travel.

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Two Thumbs Out is a 5* Star Adventure from the 1950's
Reviewed in Australia on 24 February 2018
This book was an absolutely delightful surprise in many ways.
The era in which this story takes place, just 10 years after WW2 in Europe, for starters.
Then the fact that two young women from Australia would ever contemplate leaving
their suburban lives in Sydney to HITCHHIKE in foreign lands whilst people from Europe
were migrating to Australia to get away from poverty and war-torn cities.
Without foreign language skills and huge sums of money to fall back on, they decided to go
backpacking and staying in hostels, which I did not even know existed in the 1950's.
A well written, true and exciting adventure which I highly recommend for all to read

ON THE ROAD AGAIN
Reviewed in Australia on 2 December 2017
A wonderful account of life 'on the road' (with apologies to Jack Kerourac) in more innocent times ... times when two young adventurers could travel through Europe in comparative safety. Peggy brings the whole venture to life. A lovely read and highly recommended!
