This collection features some of Annie's earlier material "The Time Was Right", "Annie's Blues" and the title track "Twisted" which features her reprise of Wardell Gray's solo which has become a vocalese landmark. Although many of the tracks on this collection are already available as bonus tracks on the 'Cranks' original cast recording CD and the 'Skylark' album, it's great to have these wonderful recordings from the early and mid-50s all on one disk. It's fascinating to hear her original and slightly more measured takes of 'Twisted' and 'Farmer's Market', which she later and more famously recorded as part of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross. It's also revealing to hear her in a big band setting with Jack Parnell and his orchestra and to really holler on songs like 'Mama, he treats your daughter mean'. The 12 tracks originally featured on the 1956 album 'Skylark' all have Annie supported by a small group led by pianist Tony Crombie and they're delightfully relaxed and sometimes playful (listen to 'I've told every little Star') versions of mostly well known standards. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who wants to discover Annie Ross and start at the beginning of her recording career. After all, how often do you find a singer who not only manages to sound sexy, but sophisticated and humourous too?

HASH(0x9d3609fc) out of 5 stars Good early Ross recordings 5 Jun. 2012

Mostly trio performances, some with band backing. Ms. Ross's chops are in good shape, and tunes like "Twisted" are already close to their final form. The repertoire is a bit too mainstream, which suggests that she is still developing her reputation and style (which working with Lambert and Hendricks would solidify). For Ross fans, a nice starting point.
