Ms Dare had backed herself into a corner because book one in this series, was for me the near perfect historical romance. With that in mind, this the second book in the series had a lot to live up to...and fell slightly short of the mark.
I liked how Ms Dare used a different setting (the tavern) but two things left me dissatisfied. The first was the Rhys saw Merry and pretty much fell in love with her on the spot, enough to become infatuated with marrying her - and the second was that Meredith set about seducing him, whilst he held off consummation until she'd agreed to marry him. It seemed implausible that a seasoned soldier would not sucumb to temptation when a seductress of Merry's metal set him in her sights. (Dont get me wrong, I'm not stereotyping soldiers - just seems odd that a man used to living for the moment, wouldnt seize take advantage!)
That said, it was a satisfying read but what I have learnt is to not read Ms Dare's books back-to-back. I dare say if I'd read other, more average HR's in between this and book one, I'd have been much more impressed.

Another triumph in this series. Tessa Dare's writing is so assured and her characters are so engaging. I love immersing myself in her worlds. Gloomy Rhys and practical Meredith are a winning combination of protagonists.

i read book one which was fantastic and book 3 which was ok and now book 2 though a nice sweet story i found it difficult to finish though my favorite part was the end the issues i had were SPOILER 1.she just was not of the regency era for me i hated the fact that she slept with different men that stopped at her inn i hated the fact that she kept on denying him through out the book using the inn as an excuse but gave it up extremely easily in the end and you cant say because she fell in love cause we were told she loved him all her life, so that did not connect !!!!i hated the fact that the guy had not been with a woman for over 11years that is just too hard to believe especially being a soldier and having moved around in so many countries and again in the 1800s just too hard to believe and how would this fact favor a romance book ?personally it was a huge turn off for me ?also the young smuggler who like the young girl was right on the money on with what he said to the heroine but he got a beating for it and when he was justified no one apologized to him ,my last peeve was that young guy in the end that turned out to have done all the bad deeds nearly getting 4 people killed and threatening her got let off with a simple warning and it leaves you feeling and thinking ,if he was so obsessed what would stop him from coming back to finish them all off ??????not a nice feeling to end a book!!????? the first book in this series was absolutely yummy these other two where ok for a light read

I am a huge fan of Dare and I have nearly read all of her books. This is number 2 of a trilogy and I wasn't keen. I'm not sure if this is because the other two books are just superb though. I found this one difficult to get into and I had a hard time trying to imagine the two main characters but I'm not sure if this is because I didn't really like either of them all that much. I found it a little hard to beleive that he would just decide to marry her just like that. You could easily miss out this book and just read the other two and it wouldn't really effect the story.

Meredith has managed to survive for years and help the village as well so when Rhys comes back she doesn't believe he will round for long. That is why she is determined to keep him at arms length but she does want him in her bed. She is dismayed when he won't take her. Soon she is angry when he keeps asking her to marry him but won't listen to her answer of no. The longer he stays in the village trying to make things right she starts to fall in love with him again but is worried deep down that he will soon leave and she will be left to sort out the mess of leaving and sort out the village.
When Rhys turns back up at his ancestral home he is shocked when he sees Meredith as she is a beauty and doesn't realise who she really is to begin with. When he realises who it is he decides to make her his wife so when she refuses he can't understand why. When he finds out what his happening in the village it makes him determined to rebuild his home and make things right again, but he faces the resistance of the village for his efforts. He is deeply hurt when the truth about the pass comes out and near brush with death makes him realise what he wants in life.

Meredith is perfect for Rhys as she understands him as she knew the horror he went through and it really helps their "relationship" along.

I really enjoyed this one and can't wait to read the next one to find out what is happening with the mysterious murder of Leo which all books are connected by.
