Product Description

Review

"The selections are wide-ranging, historically informed, judicious ... the commentary by Drain is marked by its fluency and unpretentiousness.."
-Herbert Blau, University of Wisconsin
"A broad and balanced survey of writings on the theatre by some of its most innovative artists and theorists ... From the most strident manifesto to the most decorous plea, this guide provides both a sketch of this century's stage history as well as a useful resource for scholars interested in the status of theatre and performance within the past 100 years."
-"American Theatre

Format: Paperback
The Style of this book is very difficult to come to terms with. The editor gives a (very, very) brief introduction to 5 threads of theatre, then presents 10 or so extracts on each. Each extract is part of an essay or book.

It is difficult not to view the book as a pile of unsorted essay-extracts or an elaborate quote-book useful when essay-writing. If, however you view each extract as being representative of the theatrical movement of which it is concerned, and assume that it is chronological, it can give a good overview of Modernism, Political, Popular, Inner (for cerebral benefit) and Global theatres.

For a more comprehensive and cohearent guide, I advise "Modern Drama in Theory and Practice" by J.L.Styan (this discusses movements individually rather than these 5 broad strands).

The bibliography is comprehensive, but comprising only of book.
