Twelve Angry Men (1997)

Compelling look at the jury deliberations in a murder trial for which a conviction means sending a young man to death row. In the course of the deliberations;a fair-minded juror exposes enough holes in the prosecution's cut-and-dry case to create a reasonable doubt. Adapted from the classic 1957 UA drama.

Why the perfect script is not enough
Verified purchase
You can have the perfect script and still mess up a movie. I watched this remake shortly after watching the 1957 version directed by Sidney Lumet. The difference is immeasurable. Lumet's version is a visual masterpiece, literally every scene is like a Renessaince painting with the angles and the lighting adding specific depth to the dialogue. This version is chaotic and rushed, this one doesn't know how to silence as a meaningful impact to the dialogue and the angles it's shot in are simply amateurish and weak. While the actors are amazing in both movies and this 97 remake even has the wonderful Jack Lemmon, this still manages to make them appear to have no credibilty.

I first saw this '97 remake and liked it very much based on the script. That is until I saw Lumet's version. Either way if you haven't seen it go watch this movie! This story is an all time classic and honestly should be mandatory viewing to everyone but if you gave a choice then certainly stick to the '57 version!

A great re-appraisal of a classic film

Was actually looking for the original with Henry Fonda and Lee J Cobb when this came up. Have always enjoyed George C Scott and thought "give it a go". Have to say, I wasn't at all disappointed. It's a bit of an ask expecting the remake of a classic film to deliver anything new and exceptional. However, this wasn't just a rehash. Fantastic cast and representations of each of the twelve characters. The presence of black actors, in particular, gave the story a powerful added dimension especially the position of "Juror Nr 10" played by Mykelti Williamson. Jack Lemmon, as the dissenting "Juror Nr 8", makes the role his own and I thoroughly enjoyed veteran actor, Hume Cronyn, cast as the elderly "Nr 9". It's a great piece of theatre with compelling characters, interplay and dynamics. My only regret was that I rented this film. I should have just bought it which I, no doubt, will at some point.

Best Remake Ever!

Sorry to disagree slightly with other reviewers. This is one of the very, very few remakes which is on a par with the original (and that was a high bar), if not possibly even slightly ahead. Jack Lemmon in the Henry Fonda role is superb, with first-rate support from George C. Scott (possibly Hollywood's most under-rated actor), Hume Cronyn, Tony Danza, Courtney Vance, etc. One of its most interesting aspects is to re-cast the loud-mouthed bigot as an African-American, thus showing that bigotry and racism is not the sole preserve of white folks. If you haven't yet watched it, do so ASAP!
