Product description

Product description

The Micro II USB sound card adds a stereo analogue output and an optical digital output to a Mac or PC. The stereo output drives powered speakers, headphones or an external recording device. Because it uses a USB digital connection, the Micro II isolates the audio signal from the noisy electronics inside a PC or laptop to provide higher-quality sound. A built-in amplifier delivers crisp, clear sound on headphones or ear buds. Inserting the included TOSLINK adapter into the stereo jack converts it into an S/PDIF digital optical output, allowing you to connect your Mac or PC to the optical digital input on home theatre systems, digital speakers and other digital audio devices. This digital connection lets you enjoy DVD or streaming digital movies on your Mac or PC in high-quality, pure digital format. By installing an optional driver, the digital output can also send 5.1 channel Dolby Digital or DTS surround sound as an encoded digital audio stream to your home theatre system. (NOTE: This feature is only available on the Windows platform.)

This product is excellent and does exactly what it says on the tin.

If you want the optical output to pass through digital signals (DTS or Dolby Digital for example) then you will need to go to the turtle beach website and download the SPDIF drivers, otherwise this product just works straight out of the box.

For me this is an excellent workaround for my TV not passing through more than 2 channels of digital audio from the HDMI inputs to the optical audio output so I am over the moon. - The only other alternative was to buy a new audio amp that had HDMI input/output capability to put between my laptop and my TV (very expensive). This device now allows me to send the audio direct from my laptop to my old Sony amp and it works flawlessly.

    Thank you Turtle Beach.

Bought this for an XBMC media centre running on a HP Microserver which doesn't have any audio hardware. Running it on Ubuntu Linux 10.04, and this worked out of the box, passing through Dolby Digital and DTS to my receiver. Gone from 6 x RCAs on my old setup to a single optical. Brilliant and cheap.

Even though not stated anywhere in the product specification, I've found that, with the s/pdif driver and a bit of tinkering in Windows 7, this device supports 7.1 surround sound. So it enables Turtle Beach PX5's to live up to their full potential.

The title says it all, but I'll reiterate! Digital surround sound plugged into my home-theatre system. A massive improvement on the standard speakers.
Just plug in the USB stick; go to settings to select USB audio - job done!

Not recommended for use on a Mac with analog speakers, or any headphones, that don't have their own volume control. This affects analog output only, I guess optical output would not have volume control anyway.

I bought this for a MacBook Air (2011, Mac OS Lion) for connecting to my home theatre in future, and in the meantime for connecting via analog output to Creative D100 speakers, which don't have any volume control of their own. I had been using the Mac OS volume control with these speakers just fine via the laptop headphone port, but figured I'd use this USB device off a hub to reduce the number of wires I've to connect.

The problem with this Turtle Beach, is the volume is deafening even at the lowest level in the Mac OS volume control, and in fact Mac OS volume control has very little effect on the volume at all.

After research it seems this is partly the fault of Mac OS (it affects other USB audio devices too, including another brand which I tried), and partly the fault of Turtle Beach for advertising Mac OS compatibility without mentioning this limitation, and not providing a driver of their own. I found that they acknowledge the issue deep in their knowledgebase - "The Micro II and Amigo II appear to be particularly loud on MAC systems" [...]) - but they provide no workaround.

I guess I'm in a fairly small minority, using speakers which don't have their own volume control. But headphones can't be used with this device on a Mac without hearing damage either.

I like the build quality of this device. As my own workaround I'm looking at audio cables to use with this device which have in-line volume controls.

My daughter's Lenovo gave up on the jack plug front, as did our other two. So my daughter sought a cheap remedy. We purchased the item hoping rather than expecting it to be of use. The reviews that go with it were too technical and not conclusive for my dopey head. The outcome - it was what the audio needed. We couldn't find a set of headphones with volume control. I think most manufacturers avoid them in the reasonable quality bracket. So my daughter has the volume set at 4% on her laptop, as that is as loud as she can bear. If like us your lappy has given up on the audio jack front, then this is your answer.

I bought this because the headphone socket on my laptop stopped working. The unit arrived in reasonable time. I just plugged it in and it worked straight away. No fiddling in control panel or anything. Sound quality is fine. I am using vista32.

A couple of downsides: it is REALLY LOUD. I need the volume wound down to about the minimum to keep it acceptable. Also the lead is a little inflexible so it rather sticks out from the laptop. Generally fine but on a crowded train it is a little in the way. ...and one more, the packaging is a little tricky to open.

Overall very pleased with it though.

The device works well on my Intel NUC 5i3RYK with Windows 8.1 64 pro but it was quite hard to reach this goal. In fact the new drivers supplied by Turtle Beach don't work on Windows 8.1 64. Without drivers by Turtle Beach, Windows see the Advantage Micro II as generic USB sound device and you don't get Dolby Digital or DTS output to your A/V receiver. To solve the problem I found a workaround supplied by Mr. Coleman in the comments about Advantage Micro II on Amazon.com. I had to find the old drivers and apply hints from Mr. Coleman. Now it works quite well, with KODI 14.2 and an old Onkyo A/V receiver.
