My love affair with vinyl replay continues with the purchase of this turntable. First, I want to praise the truly excellent delivery service from Gadjet Exchange. It had arrived well before the earliest delivery date and the new year.
I had wanted to own a direct drive turntable for some time, but was convinced by audiophiles that belt drives still had the edge when it came to sound quality, The AT-LP5 demonstrates that it can successfully challenge similarly priced Regas & Projects belt drive offerings for sound quality and surpass them for ergonomics.
The build quality is very good for the price, the tonearm, with its detacheable headshell, appears to be of high quality inspiring confidence that cartridge upgrades will be no problem. There's no rumble during quiet music passages nor do I have to remove the platter to change its speed. Of course its a USB deck capable of outputting 16bit/44KHz digital to a computer which , due to the short time I've been using it, is yet to be assessed.
Using it as a standard record deck with the supplied AT95ex cartridge through its line output, I listened to a number of my favourite records again and found the sound quality to be very impressive demonstrating wonderful detail retrieval, propulsive rhythmic drive with excellent clarity across the frequency range. Bass was powerful and well defined, midrange was clear and explicit with just a hint of excess brightness and the treble smooth without any harshness. Although good enough as is, changing the cartridge to a Shure M97XE showed that it can respond to a cartridge upgrade with an even more polished performance taming the slightly excessive midrange brightness and providing greater lower level detail.
If you are looking for a new or replacement high quality turntable you should put the Audio Technica AT-LP5 high on your list. You would find it upgradeable, very easy to use and capable of producing excellent sound quality.

Although turntable technology cannot be accused of being on the cutting edge this is a clear step up from my old turntable. It looks and feels like a quality product, reassuringly heavy, made from quality materials and not 'plasticky'. The only slightly awkward element is the power switch on the rear of the turntable which has to be turned on and off by touch

The set up was straightforward, although the tonearm was a little fiddly to get the right 2 gram balance - a cheap electronic gauge helped to sort that. The phono stage included in the deck is adequate - but to really make this sing I would suggest a dedicated phono amplifier is a must.

The sound is slightly on the bright side, but it compliments the rest of my system well. I was a bit dubious around it having a direct drive set up - but it has proved quiet and the speed has been on the money.

I know you can spend thousands on turnable related equipment - but the balance between cost, sound quality and upgradability (via the cartridge) is spot on. Very very pleased

Firstly - I didn't buy this from Amazon as a famous high street retailer offered a better deal in terms of warranty (sorry Amazon).

25 years after dispensing with my vinyl, I decided to take the plunge investing in a turntable. Obviously I have no vinyl (yet) but my wife kept all her vinyl so I had something to start with.

I settled on the AT-LP5 Turntable as I felt it represented excellent value for money having read the reviews (bit of a risk when you haven't tried something before).

The turntable and accessories come well packed. The base unit (reassuringly heavy), platter (superb manufacturing), phono cables (cheap and worthless), cartridge (delicate), stylus (tiny and delicate), a CDROM containing Audacity software, quick start guide (don't throw it away as it gives you the counterweight and anti-skate settings for the supplied stylus set-up) and a comprehensive guide. There's a seven inch hole filler for any smaller discs that are missing their centre (like in the ones they use in vinyl jukeboxes).

Socket wise, there a 3 pin socket on the back along wiht the phono outputs, a switch to boost the signal to an amp which doesn't have a dedicated turntable input (more commonly known as a phono input), on/off switch, a USB port for sending music to a computer and a 33/45 rotary switch on the top.

The tonearm is a maginificent piece of engineering. Compared to an old turntable I used to have, I can see that things have moved on significantly as I couldn't see any physical flaws. The tonearm is clamped. The counterweight is weighty and screws on easily at the back of the tonearm. The markings are a little difficult to make out but that's my eyesight to blame. The anti-skate dial has very clear markings on it.

I wanted to upgrade my turntable (I had an aiwa) but at the same time I didn't want to add a pre-amplifier into the mix (too many devices already connected to same plug). My main concern was, without using an established audiophile method (direct-drive with integrated pre-amp instead of belt-driven + super-duper pre-amp), to notice the improvement in sound from my records.
Well, the improvement on sound is highly noticeable. Records sound so nice now that it is hard to leave the room. I just feel I want to listen to the music for the pleasure of listening to that sound rather than for the music itself.
