I am an avid reader of WW2 books. My only concern is that there is so much history that I find it difficult to take it all in and to put it all into context. I was really pleased with this book as it dealt with the main battles and explained what the thinking was and strategies involved at the time. It seemed to make things more understandable for me! I enjoyed it and I will look out for similar books using this format.

I have read a couple of books from this author and never been disapointed.

The book offers a good introduction to the subject.

The main battles of WWII are well described with lots of details.

Photographs great too.

Like its counterpart, 'Over the Top' did for the First World War, this book provides a high-level view of the Second World War.

We don't get detail here but we do get a clear narrative of the progress of the war divided into different theatres.

The benefit here is that the entire conflict is covered at the expense of detail. So this is not necessarily a reference book, but if you want to get a flavour of a whole campaign before deciding where you want to explore further with other books, then this is the book for you. For instance, the entire desert campaign is covered in a mere 38 pages.

Quite simply the best summary of the War I have read.

Turning the tide gives a good overview about the main battles of the WWII, which are described so that a reader will gain enough knowlegde of the campaigns to arouse need to know them better. So this is a good popularised starting point to begin. Only minus side is that couple of campaigns are missing from book.

I found this very I formative and it gave extra information as to what went on behind the scenes of the battles. Easy to follow, and written in such an interesting manner that I found a gripping read to be honest. I had read history books, personal accounts, watch films ext on the majority of battles mentioned, however I discovered a lot of extra information that I never knew. Good book.

This is a good account of the WW2 battles, and I've read a lot about the war. Extremely readable, I only regret the lack of proper maps (Kindle edition). Don't expect many personal stories, but it gets into a decent level of detail and gives you the picture of each important battle.

A difficult job to write a WW2 history in brief like this book, but it is reasonably well done. Some statistics are dubious i.e tank losses in the Western Desert, others are more interesting. A good book for someone wanting an introduction to WW2.
