The Donnas - Turn 21

Amazon.co.uk

Eight years and four albums down the line from their Californian inception at the relatively tender age of 13, and the artists formerly known as The Electrocutes and Raggedy Ann have forged an evocative style of razor-edged, good-time rock & roll that positively redefines exuberance. The onset of musical maturity has seen The Donnas honing their melodic and harmonic chops, while steadily moving away from their undeniably seductive yet irrefutably restrictive Ramones-clone roots to embrace the dynamic metal manners of a roughshod Joan Jett or a punked-up AC/DC. The sneering, ennui-soaked vocals of Donna A. leave the stylistic frills to Donna R.'s guitar. And as Donnas C. and F. provide a rock-solid rhythmic backdrop, the combined effect is so gloriously visceral, slack-jawed and entirely bereft of affectation and contrivance, that even an irony-free cover of Judas Priest's "Livin After Midnight" seems to make some kind of mosh-hastening good sense. --Billy Fisher

Having listened to all of their previous albums, this one shows a lot more maturity, both in writing and performing. The lyrics are catchy, infectious, irrerevant and a whole lot of fun! The backing music is a non-stop, high energy mix of thrash guitar and thumping drums.
In contrast to their previous albums, the songs are getting longer, approaching that magic three minute mark. Again, this marks their growing abilities.
Definitely one of the best albums I've heard this year. Constantly listening to this one and it never fails to bring a smile to my face.
The Donnas are definitely the Girl Power band for the new millenium! Think Spice Girls with a bad attitude!

I bought this after purchasing 'Spend the night' and 'Gold Medal'.
I have to be honest, I was disappointed with the 'Turn 21' album, and found it
a lot more raw than the other albums.

It is all down to personal taste, but I played this album once or twice in the car and haven't touched it since.

:I hadn't really heard of the Donnas until the other day, when i heard 40 boys in 40 nights on Lamaq's show on Radio 1. It's a good fun record, seems quite punky to me, in a similar vein to Green Day. On the other hand, some of the other songs are far more rock orientated. But there is no doubt that these girls have talent. The songs are so catchy, you'll find yourself singing them all day. Possibly the lyrics could be more diverse (we never seem to really get past the theme of 'boys'), but in comaprison the lyrics from At The Drive In's latest album make no sense to me what so ever. It's the music that really counts, in my book anyway, and the Donnas do excel themselves. Having heard this album, and falling in love with her gorgeous voice, i've got to get their other 3 albums. Whatever type of alternative music yu like, there'll be something that'll appeal to you, be it hard metal or melodic catchy pop, you just can't resist them. Superb.
