Review

Winner of the European Book Prize for Non–Fiction

"Rich in insights on conceptualising problems and identifying solutions."
LSE Review of Books

"A significant intervention into the debate about Europe′s future."
Gerhard Schröder, former Chancellor of Germany

"An indispensable book at a time when clear thinking about the EU is vital. Deserves to be actively debated across Europe at such a critical juncture in the continent’s history."
Javier Solana, former EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Secretary–General of NATO

"In the 1980s the famous Cecchini Report played a crucial role in fostering the single currency. I expect this book by Tony Giddens to play a similar role in the creation of the more integrated Europe essential to us all twenty five years later."
Giuliano Amato, former Prime Minister of Italy

"A great book bout the possibilities for European social democracy in the modern world."
Progress Online

"From the perspective of a new entrant country like Romania, Giddens′ views are as relevant as they are to the founding member states. A must–read for all who are concerned about Europe′s future, whatever shade of opinion they may hold."
Ana Birchall, MP and Member of the European Affairs Commission, Romanian Parliament

"A must–read from one of the leading thinkers of our time, for all who want the European Project to adapt and progress, and preferably do so with the United Kingdom as a committed member of a stronger but also more flexible Union."
Kemal Dervis, Vice–President for Global Economics at the Brookings Institution and former Turkish Minister of Economic Affairs

"...Giddens succeeds in cutting through much of the turgid intramural debate on Europe to offer a clear diagnosis of the European Union’s dilemma, and a powerful argument in its favour."
Survival: Global Politics and Strategy

"The author raises a wide range of subjects: global warming, energy consumption, immigration, digital economy, diplomacy. His viewpoints are clear. This oeuvre offers a logical and thought–provoking perspective."
Politique Etrangère

"This latest work by Anthony Giddens is a brilliant and subtle contribution to the future of Europe."
Europe′s World

"The book provides a comprehensive and relatively accessible overview of the diverse problems facing contemporary Europe."
Political Studies Review

This is not the first time I have read one of Anthony Giddens' books. The problem I have is not so much with the content as with the style.

There are lots of accessible books on politics and the EU. So the very short introduction book comes to mind. It tells you the facts and how it works. You can also take a historical approach which will be filled by the anecdotes and accounts of strategy and politics and the machinations of the UK, Germany and France in the post-war settlement. So Giddens takes all of the interest out of the subject with a very dry theoretical and difficult read. He tries to make what should be an important and enlightening book as dense as possible. I found the same with his book on climate change, another fascinating subject dessicated.

So if you fancy taking on this soporific read then go for it, but I feel that there are other books which are less reliable and less honest and carefully weighted that are going to be much more convincing and present much more accessible answers. The horrible thought is that one of those better reads might be written by Mr Farage.

For anyone who would describe themselves as pro-EU and who is readying themselves for debate with friends/colleagues in the run-up to the UK's referendum on membership, this is a must-read.
It's also a must-read for anyone inside the EU, as it openly and honestly takes account of what the EU set out to achieve, what is has achieved (quite a large difference between those two), and how it needs to change in order to be given the chance to go on trying to achieve anything it all. As Giddens points out, this is the key for the pro-EU camp. Acknowledging the flaws that have existed in the EU to date... and then setting out ways to change them. Anyone who says the EU has been an unmitigated success is clearly deluded, and it is this sort of delusion (and dishonesty) that so angers the anti-EU brigade.
Split into six chapters—The EU as a Community of Fate; Austerity and After; No More Social Model?; The Cosmopolitan Imperative; Climate Change and Energy; The Search for Relevance—Giddens examines how the world has changed since the arrival of EU predecessor the European Coal and Steel Community in 1951. Globalisation, he argues, has changed the world in a way none of us ever imagined possible. Along with the internet, it has destroyed borders and barriers, in almost every respect. He talks of how even muli-culturalism is a defunct concept, and should instead be replaced with "Interculturalism", as nowadays, migrants are able to keep in touch with home and their birth culture far more easily than 20 years ago.
It is this situation that the EU needs to understand and embrace, he says, rather than fighting against. The EU needs to become the first truly modern continent; to change our understanding of a federal allliance.

The referendum for UK residents to decide whether or not to remain in the EU is imminent in 2017. The various risks and benefits of both leaving or staying with a revised treaty has largely been a somewhat superficial discussion from politicians and media pundits, with an evident bias from each political party, more often than not with a worrying real lack of detail and proper information.

These piecemeal chunks and much repeated sound bites do little to promote intelligent and informed discussion. This thoughtful book serves to remedy with its passionate but cogent and considered argument, in this particular author’s hope for remaining within the EU.

This book has much to recommend it, but I do despair with the lack of a basic psychology, in that very little on the intellectual sphere has been directed towards such most important issues as how those we give power to actually take on the mantle of representing us everyday man. The whole dynamics of group psychology seems desperately missing, and will eventually form the nature of the EU, regardless of deep intellectual discussion on politics or economics.

A rather saddened applaud for this book.

This is a facinating book written by one of the foremost sociological thinkers of our age. A particularly timely text considering the intention of the UK goverment to hold an in/out referendum on UK membership of the EU.
Giddens discussion of austerity is skilfully presented and tables a necessary agenda of items that willneed to be considered and dealt with ranging from the sub-text of diverse cultural groupings through to the enforcementof sanction in policing its house at large.
It is clear that providing answers, easy or otherwise, is not the author's remit and this makes this an even more valid argument for the relevance of the book. However whilst this will inform the literate reader as they consider the presssing issues that must be tackled if a good decision is to be made on staying within or withdrawing from the EU, it might just add dimensions to the argument that could confuse the individual, and this is both the reason that one should read it as well as the reason one should not. Personally I highly recommend that you buy it now!
