Whilst this is a good effort to provide a historical context for the rising of Tupac's star which is directly relevant to the black condition, I feel there are several things which let it down. Firstly, there are a couple of key factual errors. Other reviews have mentioned some but the one that stood out to me was Shock G's date of birth which is described as 1980. That would have made him 12 when he became successful with Digital Underground. Lol. Secondly, the authors offer their personal opinion where it's not particularly valid like where they call Afeni a narcissist or speculate on the happiness of Biggie's childhood or the usefulness of the Thug Life campaign. Lastly, the organisation of the chapters is odd. It effects the time-line and you keep jumping back and forth so it makes it difficult to follow the story of Tupac's life. It's also worth noting that the chapter on women is actually just one paragraph and can be summed up in one line: Jada and Leila were the two most influential females in Pac's life. The rest of the 4 page chapter had nothing to do with women...I found that pretty weird and humorous. Otherwise, the rare tidbits of insight add to the greater picture of what you might already know. One thing I've learned is that there's no "right" book on Tupac. He's too complex. Every one has something interesting to offer based on what you're looking for. Tupac Remembered was about stories from people who knew/admired him and had more of a conversational tone. It got rave reviews and I bought it but was not particularly moved. Where as Inside a Thug's Heart was basic but the most revealing I've read because it contained extremely intimate letters and poems direct from the source. Got Your Back is by his former bodyguard and is more focused on his life after prison. ..so the learning continues...

I am a big fan of Tupac and have been fascinated with his life since I was 14 when I first heard of his death in 1996. I didn't know who he was at the time, I heard Tim Westwood dedicating one of his shows to the death of Tupac and thinking back now it was a very sad show. This book is a good introduction for anyone who has not read anything about Tupac and would like to get a picture about his life. It is a fairly easy read and tells the rags to riches life of Tupac Shakur who had packed more into 25 years than most people do in a life time.

This book is well written but somewhat lacks feeling as it is a fairly objective account of the rap star, there is not mant exagerations or expansion on who Tupac really was as a person. All the information is taken from interviews from other books as well as videos from documentarys as well as short clips pf him that available to watch on youtube. However, it is definately worth reading for anybody who is new to Tupac and are looking to understand more about his life.

The bad point of this book is that some chapters start off talking about Tupac but go off the subject and get lost in sociological issues such as chapter seven in which talks about historical issues such as Presidents like Nixon and Lyndon B Johnson. Chapter Eleven also spends 5 pages talking about the social issues of Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter which are obviously wriiten to give us a bit of background and depth to the life and times Tupac grew up in but I found myself somewhat saying "C'mon, I want to read more about Pac! What did he think about all this?' But the author just ends the chapter without making it relevant to Tupac's philosphy and I have seen atleast one interview of him critizing Reagan amongst other politicians as he was very politically aware.

Good, interesting read. However it can sometimes feel like a re-wording of a Wikipedia page with little opinion-based thought. Some distracting and ill-fitting chapters but, overall very informative and enjoyable to read.

i was expecting to find more about pac's life in this book. there is too much reading about things such as presidents, or mutulu shakur's life and so on. most the things about tupac i watched in different dvd's.so in my oppinion ts better to buy 2pac's poetry book or smthin. however its good to have 2pac's biography in paper, for your collection. 4 stars.
