I'm 8 books in and I'm determined to finish the entire series ans I bought them all based on reviews. I do not like V.I one bit. I hate her flimsy justifications for butting her nose into things. I hate her self righteousness. I hate her disregard if others people's feeling, desires or wants in the name of finding the truth and having justice done. I hate the way she bristles when offered help under the guise of being a string competent woman. I hate her atrocious house keeping habits and her social drinking that sometimes borders on having a drinking problem. I don't think I can be more obvious in my dislike of her and everything she stands for. In fact, the level of corruption she keeps on unearthing single handedly annoys me. But, I bought the books and I'm going to read every single one. I expect she will get even worse as I proceed through the rest of the series.

Well I have come to Book 8 after reading 1 to 7 back to back! Now I don’t know if my intense dislike of Trump or USA politics has coloured my view but my goodness my dislike of the USA has definitely got worse!! Sadly I can’t help but think the ‘politics’ of the country is being set out for view by the Author. This is one of the best of the last 8 and I think it is excellent!
An excellent book with the development of the VI character both interesting and sad! Reading these books now is strange as the first was before computers and mobile phones were common place. I am interested to see where the next 10 books take us!

Yep, usual sort of thing. Not as good as other novels, and I wonder if Paretsky is running out of steam. This felt rather formulaic - Vic goes into battle yet again against the wealthy and the powerful, who are almost by definition corrupt. It stretched my credulity more than once - I began to wonder if anyone would really put themselves through all this pretty tough treatment. But it was enjoyable, well-plotted, quite complicated (so I had to concentrate!) but none the less a good holiday read. However, even back in 1994 when first published, the term "queer bar" and the slightly scornful description of its customers is not good.

This isn't the page turner I'm used to with Warshawski stories. I used to devour her stories on a long flight but this one didn't hold my interest to the same extent. It is hard to say why. The plot is fine with the usual dare devel antics from VI but I didn't care about the characters one way or the other. I think the real trouble was the prose - somewhat pedestrian as if it was done in too much of a hurry or it was ghost written. I've vowed to go back and re-read one of her earlier books to see if I still feel the same way.
