If you haven't owned Tumi bags before, I imagine like me you're thinking "$165 for ballistic nylon?" While there is definitely a premium for the Tumi name I have to say the ballistic nylon this bag is made of is thick and luxurious and heavy. It's soft to the touch compared to the average camera bag and the weave is thicker. It's really quite beautiful with the leather accents, and so on. Even the strap feels more like silk than the usual nylon webbing used on cheaper bags.
The inner honeycomb-style lining is strangely soft. It feels luxurious almost like you might wrap your crystalware in it, but it's also tough and resilient. These kinds of synthetic materials are what you might expect if Tumi engineers raided Area 51.
As for the functionality... It's damned near impossible to find the perfect bag for an iPad Mini, so if you have one and are looking for a suitable bag STOP LOOKING. I bought this at the same time as the Tumi Alpha-Bravo Beale, because I was uncertain if this bag was too small. It's not. It's too small for your drink, but your iPad Mini will just LOVE it. The Beale is better for regular iPads, or if you absolutely must carry a drink bottle at all times.
The photos on Tumi's website are somewhat more useful, but even so it can be hard to see all the hidden features of a bag before buying. The most notable but easily overlooked feature of this bag is a slip pocket located on the front of the bag, under the flap. It's the PERFECT size for an iPad Mini laid horizontally. This pocket also contains pen slots etc, but happens to be just magically sized for an iPad Mini. Even if you over-stuff this bag, you can still fit the iPad mini in the front compartment vertically, and it stays nicely covered by the flap.
This leaves the bottom U-shaped pocket free for your sunglasses, while the main body can hold your other miscellany. I carry a long (travel-style) wallet with my whole life in it, and often fold up my beret and stuff it in there. It's got plenty of room for all your bits and pieces and little pockets everywhere, including a pocket in the rear compartment which seems like it was designed specifically for an earbud-case and fits the Apple EarPods beautifully.
If you're intending to wear this bag crossbody-style (recommended!) you'll absolutely love where the strap is attached to the front of the bag. They've sewn it to the inside so the bag and strap sit naturally closer to the body. It helps reduce the usual flapping around that messenger bags tend to do when you jog across the street to avoid that one weird guy nobody likes.
The strap isn't super-long, but at full extension sits just about perfectly on a broad-bodied 6'7" man. I've had longer, but I doubt many would want or need more length than that.
This and the Beale were my first Tumi purchases and I am now an instant raving fan. If for some reason you buy one of their bags and aren't completely impressed, chew me out in the comments then use the free return shipping label provided.
I have a number of packs and bags I use on a regular basis for work, hiking, running around, etc. The two most important features on my bags are 1 - organization, and 2 - comfort. With that in mind, this bag was great in Europe because, while I wasn't always able to fit everything I wanted to in it, I was also prevented from filling it up to the point that it was uncomfortable. These wasn't enough room for anything that would put stress on my shoulder, even after a 10 hour walk-fest in London. I did want to put more stuff in sometimes, but I never actually needed anything other than what I did put into this bag.
Price is one thing that keeps this from being a pure winner. It's too expensive at full price. I bought it for about 40% off, and think that's a fair price, but would not have been satisfied otherwise. Quality and materials are top notch, but it's a small man-purse, not a full sized bag. The other small detractor is the strap. It's good quality and the nylon is very smooth and slick. In fact, it's too slick. The bag slid up my neck-line sometimes, until it was rubbing uncomfortably. If you have a high necked shirt this is not an issue, but with a t-shirt or large opening at the neck, this may bother you as it did me. I rubber shoulder pad would have solved this, and it's too bad this detail wasn't included.
Bottom line, it's a good bag to keep you from over-packing, and I'm keeping it because it served me well in Europe, and it does look cool, but a similar sized option with a rubber shoulder pad and more attractive price would have been my choice if I could do it again.
I looked high and low for a replacement to the clutch, searching online and looking in stores. I saw this product, the Tumi Alpha Bravo Day Barslow Cross Body Bag in a Father's Day ad on Facebook and followed the link. This bag is larger than the clutch I had, but is still compact. Hopefully by being a bit larger, and having a strap, these factors may keep me more aware of the bag. Tumi Alpha Bravo Day Barslow Cross Body Bag
Many reviewers said it was too small. To me, it is a perfect bag for the incidentals that usually get stuffed uncomfortably in my pocket: phone, hand sanitizer, keys, business cards, change, pen, lip balm, sunglasses in a soft bag, medium size point and shoot camera (I always like having a camera with me), and note cards. There are three compartments to the bag, plus a rear open/slip in pocket.
Although I just got the bag yesterday, the materials and construction seem durable. The bag is attractive and clearly designed for a man.
This is a good day-to-day bag to use at home because it's easy to get in and out of the flap into the main compartments. However, that's exactly the reason why this bag is NOT suitable for international travel or use in close quarters, such as a packed subway. In other words, the user needs to be alert in particular environments when using this bag.
A little on the small side...but fit me perfectly. I am only 5'7 so I can not handle a larger crossbody bag. I purchased this bag because I want to treat it as a metro camera bag for my mirrorless sony A6000 with 1670 lens. However, it is a little small and narrow. If I squeeze my camera in it, then not too much space was left for other stuff such as a battery charger or headphone. Still I will rate it a 5.
