Product Description

About the Author

Author of Quilts from the House of Tula Pink, Tula Pink has become an icon of the fabric and quilt work. She designed her first fabric collection in her living room in L.A., after work and on weekends. The day she left her job in L.A., she sent it into Moda Fabrics and by the time she got to Albuquerque, it was in production. Tula was a Senior Designer with Moda, as well as having her own design label with them. She produced 6 collections under that label, including the incredibly popular Neptune and Plume collections. As of August 2010, she works with FreeSpirit (home to the likes of Joel Dewberry, Anna Maria Horner, Heather Bailey, Jenean Morrison and Valori Wells). Her fabrics are designed not just for quilting, but for a whole lifestyle of DIY-ers with a passion for saying things like “Hey, look what I made” or “Don’t sit on that, it’s still wet.”

I was a bit disappointed by this book. All the blocks are 6 1/2 inch square and a lot are not very exciting.
Perhaps it is a good book for beginners as the blocks are quite easy.
The picture on the front is deceiving as to use the blocks you would need to make quite a large quilt for it to look anything.
also the cutting instructions are not very clear either.

I really like this book, it doesn't feel like a standard quilting book. It's modern, beautiful illustrations, great instructions and its flexible - you are not restricted to creating the quilts as they are in the book. The blocks are quick and beginners should find them relatively easy. I can't wait to get started! I originally reviewed this book on my blog, for my full review click on this link http://duckeggthreads.blogspot.co.uk/2013/05/city-sampler-100-modern-quilt-blocks.html

I absolutely loved this book! I found it really inspirational for the use of colour and the way quilting is used to enhance each individual six inch block. Tula also briefly touches on colour combinations and showcasing a fabric to give it a starring role within a block. I wish she had gone into this in more depth actually, but that is just because my interests lead that way. The book is is separated into sections for each type of block, crosses, squares etc and shows a picture of the block on one page, with a drawing on the facing page showing how to put the block together and instructions at the top of the page to tell you what to cut out of each colour fabric. At the beginning of the book are basic instructions for making the blocks, but not in masses of detail. At the back are details about assembly of the blocks to create one of several different quilts. It also has a small diagram which shows which tones of colour should go where on the 'gridlocked' quilt. I wouldn't recommend this book if you're looking for detailed instructions for beginners, but I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who wants to be inspired! These six inch blocks would be great to use up leftovers of fabric. Overall I felt that the design of the blocks and the quilting has a very free and easy feel to it, encouraging the reader to build on the designs with their own ideas, encouraging creativity rather than merely copying a pattern. The fabrics used in the quilt are mostly Tula Pink's own designs, some of which are almost impossible to get hold of, but they look amazing!

This turned out to be exactly what I expected. A modern alternative to 'dear jane' etc quilts. This book gives lots of blocks which have been left unnamed to allow the reader to personalize them themselves and produce their own story quilt with blocks that tell the readers own story. If the idea of designing and naming your own quilt seems daunting , don't worry there area also some beautiful quilt designs at the end of the book made from the featured blocks. I just need the time now to sit and stitch to produce my own masterp

Lovely bright photos and illustrations. One block per double page makes it an easy book to use, but ring-binding would have been better so that it would lay flat when opened. I like the coloured cutting guides for each block, making it very easy to see what you need to cut from each fabric. Illustrations for making up are clear and easy to follow. Five different layout solutions in different sizes to finish the book with lots of tips on choosing colours. All blocks will measure 6 inches square when finished.

this book has 100 6" blocks to make, very clear instructions and a joy to do, I am working through it with a flickr link, 3 blocks a week are done and this is easy to fit in around everything else, I would highly recommend it.

Although I find some designs a bit 'modern' I like Tula Pinks sampler quilts and ordered this book after I saw a friends version of the cover quilt - I will be making the cover design as a scrappy quilt

Having made two quilts already, using jelly rolls, I decided to broaden my horizons and try something different. I have already made up a couple of the blocks and am pleased with the result. The book also includes sufficient instructions for putting 5 quilts together.
