With both the Gaelic and English translations, this is a vital sourcebook of where the bardic tradition stands in modern Gaelic Scotland. As always with Black's scholarship, it is his detailed notes on the source material that are its making, and in this volume, I especially appreciated the detailed biographies that he has compiled on each of the poets - those on Alexander Carmichael and the Rev Kenneth Macleod of Eigg having been very helpful for my own work.
