I'll admit I bought this series a few years ago but had to give up which I never do but it was just to dour! However, after finding them on my kindle I thought I'd try again - not my best idea!!
Claire is basically kidnapped by Anthony/Tony and that's how the story goes, or supposedly goes! There's no particular POV in this, it's written as a descriptive story which is actually quite annoying - I couldn't connect at all with the characters. It suggests that it's a very dark abusive story but there's no actual details? Yes maybe that's a good thing to some people but if we're to believe a story it needs to be told properly, not just hint at it! 'tony took what he wanted from me and left me again'?? Took what?
Even the writing of script seems wrong....Claire was young lively likeable fun-loving and worked in a bar after loosing her preferred job but after she's kidnapped she's scripted as saying things like 'yes I believe I am tired and would like to rest' 'i believe that I shouldn't do this' etc I don't know about anyone else but if your the above girl then you talk normal as in I'm tired/shattered' not 'i believe....' Also the word compartmentalize is mentioned sooooooo many times its annoying!
The book drags on and I mean drags! It could've been cut in half and made more sense - just because it's a long book doesn't mean it's a good book! So I skimmed a lot of it.
Around the 90% mark it gets interesting! So if you've already downloaded then just skip ahead, don't worry you'll still be able to follow.
Because of the last part I probably will read the next book but I think I'll have to wait a while before attempting it.
Sorry Aleatha, I hate to leave bad reviews but it just wasn't for me.
From the start I found it really intriguing, but towards the middle I found it incredibly implausible and a bit repetitive. Then it got better again.
i think the plot was cleverly written. However the author seems to avoid any real description of the abuse suffered by Claire. It's implied rather than described and left to your imagination.
I'm currently reading the second book in the series and so far so good.
Definitely worth a read.
Tony is clever and has played her well. I found this book to be rather realistic, if this were a real situation I think the author portrayed exactly how the heroine would react and feel, not many may agree with her choices and I found myself screaming at my kindle on more than one occasion but I held it in my head knowing that Claire was damaged, she had a very bad case of Stockholm syndrome or so it seemed. She made the choices she had to make to survive and I really hope she kicks ass in future.

I couldn’t connect to the characters and the storyline felt very dragged out for me.
Sorry not for me.
