Format: Audio CD
Back in the late 90s, Shizuo collaborator Annika Line Trost teamed up with EC8OR noistress Gina V D'Orio to release the DHR label's most playful and least bombastic album, the self-titled Cobra Killer. Crafted from chopped-up samples and looping beats shrouded in raw production, it was an oddly addictive proposition, if a little rough around the edges.

Some years later, the Cobra Killer sound became smoother and tighter, and this, the fragrant Ms Trost's debut solo effort, is very much in the same vein. Lifting funky rhythms and the occasional vocal sting from 60s pop and soul records, then underpinning them with dark B-movie atmospherics, the final effect is peculiarly thrilling, one of the finest examples being the disarmingly danceable 'Man On The Box'.

Trost's singing is a joy throughout, as she shifts between three languages - throaty German, coquettish French and breathy English. Whatever the language, she manages to combine a dangerous allure with moments of startling fragility. When added to the jazzy, sample-rich trip-hop, the result is intoxicating.

A perfect purchase for long-term DHR acolytes who wish for softer sounds, or trip-hoppers after something a little different. Trust in Trost.
