If tantrums are common in your home or your classroom, this is a gentle instruction tool for you! Jane Clark walks us through the simple technique of counting to ten any time that feeling of a fit comes on. Counting and number recognition are an additional side-benefit to this book. Though the story obviously involves the negative emotions of anger, this is skillfully navigated around with just the right amount of humor and adorable illustrations.
Was Trumpet's party ruined? The test came when Trumpet did not win any of his party games. He felt the tears of rage beginning, but successfully remembered his mother's instruction: "1 . . . 2 . . .3 . . ." he counted until he felt calm again. The most delightful twist in this story is the end. When the cake is overturned in a water fight, Trumpet's mother has a test of her own. The picture of Trumpet helping his mother count to ten could not be more perfect! You'd have to see for yourself!
Then we get into the story. As the title indicates, Trumpet has a hard time controlling his temper but his Mommy helps him learn some very helpful anger management techniques. This would be such a fun read aloud book because of all the emotion and sound in the text. "It toppled to the ground. SPLAT!" Lots of opportunity for fun voices and actions. The art work is simple in that there is not a lot of background detail but the character pictures are very detailed and interesting to look at. I especially loved the eyes of each character: very expressive. This is a great book for teaching about staying in control of your actions - with some counting thrown in for good measure. Loved it!
