Rarely does one come across a book which so completely captures the essence of an era. Max Allan Collins has achieved this in spades. He is simply the master of the historical mystery novel. Nathan Heller is a well rounded character, and his interaction with some of the era's most notable figures is exceedingly well done. I can only hope the entire line of Nathan Heller novels get back into print. If you're a fan of Hammett, Chandler, etc, you're sure to love it.

A good crime novel set in the era of prohibition with plenty of known names cropping up, such as Eliot Ness and Al Capone.Private detective Nate Heller makes a good main character and the only reservation I have about this story is at times I found it too descriptive of buildings and locations.I know the author is trying to set the theme of the time, but I found it rather tiresome. Otherwise a good read and will certainly try more by Max Allen Collins.

Light easy reading for a serious subject, some parts I didn't understand but that could be because I live in Britain. Cleverly, subtly, written description of personal matters yet exiting action description.

I really enjoyed this book. The author clearly researched the era, and the Chicago Fair, and the detail gave a real sense of the atmosphere of the time. Weaving real characters of the time (Ness, Capone) into the fiction added an extra touch of realism. I'll certainly read more by this author.

A worthy read, especially for the price...I enjoyed the story without knowing an awful lot about the history or location, it didn't matter as enough detail is given in the explanations. The descriptions are sometimes a bit lengthy for me but they do paint a picture of each scene very well. To me it also seemed to die down a bit toward the end, I pushed on and got a rather nice ending but no gripping climax I had come to expect. Overall I enjoyed the book, it was a fun detective story losing a star due to the endings lack of ambition. After this book I would read another in the series for a similar price as I enjoyed it.

A story with a twist. A chance to escape, but a very plausible tale of an unbent cop! The scene is set quite brillianly with good imagination and research, one could almost imagine it to be a true story
