Nelsan Ellis as the short order cook/drug dealer Lafayette and Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin as the romantic leads give mesmerizing performances.
True Blood is an interesting set of stories by Faulkner, who says that the only thing really worth writing about (or thinking about, by extension) is the human heart in conflict with itself.
The Southern United States depicted in True Blood is conflict embodied--you are a supposed to be a good Christian, and follow the rules of an established society, but you live in the middle of a swamp so dense and wild that it believably could be home to minions of Satan, like vampires.
It's a lot to think about. If you are one of those artistic/professional types with too much to do, don't start watching this; it becomes an obsession.
Subsequently I have now purchased series 2 - 4 and am enjoying immersing myself into the series.
The writing of this show is immense, the one liners and witty dialogue just works on so many levels, and the most interesting thing to me about True Blood - is that they live in mainstream society. So, instantly the "this is a secret" plotline is gone, so they have to work around that. Each charactr is layered, and so three dimensional, there are no filler characters.
Often the lead female character fails to impress in supernatural/dark/vampire type tv shows or films, but Sookie is full of spunk, attitude and determination with the sensitive site too. And the chemistry between Sookie and Bill, and Sookie and Eric is electric throughout.
Despite the fact that Charlaine Harris's books were written prior to Twilight, the best way I can describe this show is, its Twilight for Adults but 10000X times better!
The result is a truly entertaining and occasionally shocking `grown up' series, about what happens when vampires come out of the closet in modern day America. The first season starts off small, when our telepathic heroine, Sookie, starts dating a vampire and attracts attention from all the wrong people. There's blood, there's tension, there's moments of slapstick, and some stand-out performances from a truly remarkable ensemble cast. By Season Four the scope of the series has broadened enormously, and the SFX do justice to the abilities of werewolves and shifters, the menacing fae, wiccans and weirdoes and... always at the core of every story, Sookie, Vampire Bill, and Eric the Viking.
Not every plotline is successful (the sex romps of the maenyd were clumsy), but overall this series has kept me happily enthralled for years, as if gazing into the eyes of an eternal... This is a high-quality production, layered with a seductive soundtrack and some pretty conceits - like the 'snick' sound when a vamp's fangs leap to attention.Read more ›
