The Trouble with Demons is the third novel in Lisa Shearin's series featuring Elven sorceress and seeker, Raine Benares. Raine's life has been turned upsidedown since she became the unwilling bond-servant to the Saghred, a mysterious, soul-eating rock, that can grant its bearer almost unlimited power, as long as it's kept fed. Now, instead of locating lost, or purloined, items, using her quick wits, modest magical abilities and connections to her extended family of pirates and brigands, she's being pursued by Goblin shamans and Elven intelligence agents, as she struggles to free herself from her unwanted link to the stone, simple contact with which seems to be increasing her magical abilities exponentially. Over last couple of weeks (covered in the previous two books) she's become involved in a power-struggle for the Goblin throne, left her home and travelled to the mage's Conclave on the Isle of Mid, and saved the arch-mage from assassination. Along the way, she's found herself beginning to develop strong feelings for both Tam Nathrach, a Goblin former dark mage and all around bad-boy, and Mycheal Eiliesor, the elven Paladin of the Conclave and the whitest of white knights.

As this book opens, Raine is forced to take time off from seeking to find a way to break her link to the Saghred when demons start appearing all over Mid. It turns out that one of the stone's former bond-servants has opened a Hellgate, attempting to regain his connection to the stone with demonic help. The demons, though, have their own agenda, and Raine, Tam and Mycheal find themselves drawn even closer together as they struggle to close the Gate, and prevent a hellish invasion of Mid.

A girl doesn't expect a simple shopping trip to turn into a living nightmare, but that's what happens to Raine Benares when she spots a demon. An unwilling bond servant to the Saghred, a stone of power that sucks out souls for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Raine has enough on her plate, what with various people, including acting Archmagus Carnades Silvanus, wanting her dead. But a whole lot more is piled on when a powerful dark mage opens a Hellgate. Having demons who want to feast on everyone on the island is bad enough, but when she finds out the Queen of Demons wants to free her husband and King's soul from the Saghred, well, saying things go from bad for worse is a pretty big understatement.

I am pretty much speechless. Seriously, can these books get any better?! Well, I know they can because I reached the end and have inklings about the next book, but oh my wow. Just one word. Amazing.

The pace of all of the novels in the Raine Benares series is awesome, but it gets to unbelievable measures in The Trouble with Demons. When you're racing against demons to save an island full of people AND to stop said demons releasing countless evil souls from the Saghred to her royal demonicness' bidding, there really isn't any time to stop, pause, and take a breath. As weird as this may sound, while reading, I had to resist the urge to get up and run, to help everyone get where they needed quicker.

Raine is such an unbelievable woman. As you can tell, she's dealing with a lot of crap, and it would be completely understandable if she were to fall to pieces, but not Raine.

Ever since I read Magic Lost, Trouble Found, the first in the Raine series, I was hooked. I read these books when I want to laugh. Even when Raine is in serious trouble, her humour lightens the intense atmosphere - of which there are many in The Trouble with Demons.

Lisa growth as an author is seen in this 3rd installment of Raine's life. Previous characters are here to stay, their characters grow and I feel like I know them as I do my own friends. New characters, both good and bad, provide entertainment and many edge of the seat moments. Tam ranks lower in my favourite character list, and Pieras creeps up it.

This is jam-packed with action from our favourite heroine. She seems more vulnerable in this book, with the stakes higher than ever. It's one you'll want to reread over and over, especially when the weather's a little grey.

This series keeps up the tempo and the pace of the action right from the beginning. This, the third book in the series, kept the same level of amusement and quirks throughout. Some series by book 3, they really need to be over, this one keeps getting more levels of complexity while maintaining a most excellent tale.

Much like the previous two outings, we're once again thrown into a whirlwind of adventures with one Raine Benaras. The characters sparkle as ever, the plot has twists and turns (as you would expect) and I personally came out feeling breathless from all the excitement. As for the two male love interest...yes please. To both. ;)

Enjoy lucky readers. I think you're in for a lot of fun.
