A pampered actor and his co-stars become part of a real war in a Southeast Asian jungle.

From Amazon.co.uk

It's not really a knock to say that nothing in Tropic Thunder is funnier than its first five minutes, so sly that--especially for people watching in theaters--you don't realise right away they are the opening minutes of the movie. This outrageous comedy begins with a series of fake previews, each introducing one of the main characters in the film-proper (not that there's anything proper about this film) and each bearing the familiar logo of a different motion picture studio: Universal, DreamWorks SKG, et al. Such playing fast and loose with corporate talismans verges on sacrilege, but it's an index of how much le tout Tinseltown endorses the movie as a demented valentine to itself. The premise is that the cast of a would-be "Son of Rambo" movie shooting in some Southeast Asian jungle get into a real shooting war with drug-smuggling montagnards. Don't ask--though the movie does have an answer--why such highly paid, usually ultra-pampered personnel as superhero Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller), Mozart of fart comedy Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), hip-hop artist Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson), and five-time Oscar-winner Kirk Lazarus from Aus-try-leeah (Robert Downey Jr.) should be running through the jungle unattended and very vulnerable. It matters only that the real-life cast has a high time kidding their own profession and flexing their comedic muscles. Bonus points go to Stiller for co-writing the script (with Justin Theroux) and directing, and to Downey, brilliant as a white actor surgically turned black actor for his role and utterly committed to staying in character no matter what ("I don't drop character till I done the DVD commentary"). Be warned: The movie, too, is committed--to being an equal-opportunity offender. Its political incorrectness extends not only to Lazarus's black-like-me posturing but also Speedman's recent, Sean Penn–style Oscar bid playing a cognitively challenged farmboy--or, in Lazarus's deathless phrase, "going the full retard." Others in the cast include Steve Coogan as a director out of his depth, Nick Nolte as the Viet-vet novelist whose book inspired the film-within-the-film, Matthew McConaughey as Speedman's sun-blissed agent back home, and Tom Cruise--bald, fat-suited, and profane--as an epically repulsive studio head. Two hours running time is a mite excessive, but otherwise, what's not to like? --Richard T. Jameson

Works more often than it fails and is visually excellent throughout, with great attention to detail and atmosphere. Watch it a couple of times and it gets a lot funnier. The three disc edition is good value with a lot of great extras and the extended cut IS better than the theatrical release. Sure to be a cult classic in a few years time.

`Tropic Thunder' was directed by, co-written by and starred Ben Stiller and makes for a fairly amusing couple of hours viewing. From the spoof adverts and film trailers at the start of this film you know what you're letting yourself in for and the film continues in much the same vein. This is a spoof Vietnam film about the filming of a Vietnam film and it borrows very heavily from Platoon, as well as other famous Vietnam films to a lesser extent. If you know your Vietnam war films you can play spot the scene relatively easily. This didn't have me belly rolling in laughter, but it did have some funny moments that raise a laugh and it is fairly easy going and humorous. The cast is pretty great, with many famous faces, not least Tom Cruise as a funny film exec and Nick Nolte as a Vietnam Veteran, but the one who stole the film for me had to be Robert Downey Junior who had me laughing at nearly every line he delivered, he was very funny and this film would've been a lot duller without him. The direction was good and the pyrotechnics were pretty impressive too. If you've seen other Ben Stiller films you'll know what to expect, this has plenty of his off the wall comedy, slightly crass jokes and lots of furrowed brows and pouting. For an afternoons easy viewing this is pretty decent, nothing ground breaking or amazing, but a good enough comedy to pass the time.

This film will really appeal to anyone who likes Robert Downey Jr. or who is familiar with any jungle or Vietnam based movies, as they are all sent up very well. If you often find Jack Black's limited-to-one-character goofy acting irritating, do not let this put you off: he is not so bad in this film as he sends up his off screen druggie persona extrememly well, and Robert Downey Jr alone is worth buying the movie for: he is hilarious from start to finish. It's a very good humoured fun movie, and will especially appeal to people familiar with other movies of the jungle/veteran type as the tongue in cheek homage is covered very deftly. Nick Nolte is superb in his "grizzled Vietnam veteran" role, and Tom Cruise is a deliciously unredeemable villan. Worth the money.

Roberty downey and tom cruise make 5 star performances, and its a good job because the film came so near yet so far... Some hilarious moments, but with the cast, i expected it too be a bit more 'gag to gag', and less action (though i acknowledge it was also and homage to the likes of Apocalypse now)... all in all not a bad film though

this is a comedy classic, well it would have been if it had been maybe half an hour shorter. the cast are terrific, robert downey junior's comeback is now complete with this, he can probably do no wrong now. probably. this, zodiac, and iron man are 3 great performances and 3 great films. ben stiller is on top form and so is jack black. watch out for a superb cameo from an almost unrecognizable tom cruise, and don't skip the first 10 minutes, as they are hillarious fake trailers for movies featuring the main characters. a very funny film, was laughing all the way through.
