Our Hamsters love these! But after some use they are starting to get noisy!
on 14 June 2015
When our Syrian hamster stopped using his 28cm wheel (we think it was too big for him) we decided to try one of these and he prefers this and every night spends several hours on the wheel. People say it is only just big enough, agreed as our fully grown Syrian fills the wheel, but he has the choice of this wheel and the bigger one, this is always the one he uses!
Unfortunately our Syrian is no longer with us and we now have a pair of dwarfs they love these wheels, they have the choice of 2 20cm wheels and a 28cm wheel which we give them at playtime. All wheels are great and even one dwarf is fine on the big wheel and has no issues. One thing though is that even though the dwarfs have the two 20cm wheels next to each other in the cage at the beginning they ran together in the same wheel, with the cover on this could have been dangerous as one would try and get on while the other was spinning, so we removed the covers, this was fine for about a week but then both wheels developed a big vibration as the dwarfs clock up some mileage! We put the face plates back on and the wheels are fine again, luckily enough they have adopted a wheel each now so not an issue but if you do want to remove the front plate I would advise against this as this acts as a support for the shaft and without this turns from a very quiet wheel to a very noisy one. Overall very happy though.
Update**after a month of hard use by the dwarfs...the wheels are getting a little noisy now after some hard use by the dwarfs and require a weekly dose of lubrication to keep the noise down, without this they would now be annoying so if you want a maintenance free option it may be best to look elsewhere.
