It's been a fair while since the Trigun series finished, at least 10 years or so now, so it was a lovely surprise to hear about a new feature length release. The film itself is set during an undetermined time during the main series, with most of the regular cast making appearances.

The animation has some new tricks up its sleeves, with 3D models being slickly inserted into the traditional 2D look, but despite the new tech it clearly tries hard to remain faithful to the old Trigun look. Eagle eyed fans may spot a few new variations, on Vash's coat and gun designs especially, but these 'new' designs are actually more faithful to the older Manga drawings. In the director's commentary you'll find out these changes were actually championed by the original artist himself, the newer computerised animation clearly allowing the extra details that wasn't possible before.

The story itself is typical Trigun fare, bad guy comes up with ludicrous plot, and Vash's antics never let up in his quest for peace. There are some genuinely interesting places the story plot takes you, but by all accounts the story is basically a good excuse for some awesome set pieces and good old action. With probably some of the wisest words I've ever heard, the Director himself expressed he doesn't care about winning awards, or stunning critics, his one and only goal was to make something Trigun fans will adore. I tip my hat to that ideal, as I found the movie extremely enjoyable from start to finish.

The film shouldn't be too off-putting to watch for newcomers to the series. It doesn't exactly tie in with any major plot points from the main series, and a new character takes the spotlight alongside Vash so newcomers aren't really missing too many details.

More Trigun could have gone one of two ways, it could have tarnished the great name Vash the Stampede established with the great manga and anime Trigun, or it could have been a great tribute to all that is good about it. Thankfully the latter happpened. This is a good movie even if you haven't seen Trigun, but when you have, it goes from good to great. My only gripe is that my PS3 decided to play it in dutch at first but a quick visit to the settings fixed that and I can't knock an entire star off for such a minor inconvenience when I am truly grateful this got released on blu-ray as it looks great (seriously put on an old Trigun DVD before or after and you will appreciate this even more)
