It's dark and often difficult, but there are moments of humour. There are clear parallels with Kafka's other noted work, Metamorphosis, in that the protagonists in each find themselves in a situation which isn't of their making. From the outset, it's truly absurd and although it required concentration to appreciate the complexities presented, I enjoyed it more the second time round. It's easy to see how and why Kafkaesque entered the English language and it's a term which is possibly more apposite now than any other time in so called democracies.
It is a dark story with no happy ending however it holds the imagination and deserves reading several times to show the different levels of the plot from satire to almost horror in the main characters revulsion of the people around him.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants more than escapism and froth.
