This is the story of two people battling the King of Prussia, Frederick II, more well known as Frederick the Great. It concentrates on the three main characters, the first is a member of the Royal Guard who falls for the the second, the daughter of Frederick, the Princess Amelia and finally the third character, Frederick himself. Meanwhile Frederick is occupied with his constant wars (the Seven Years War) against the Austrians. The guard, Freiher von der Trenck, and the Princess struggle against the odds as Frederick attempts to marry her off to one of his favourite Monarch's, specifically to one of the Royals in the Royal court in Sweden. She, on the other hand, wants to choose her own love, this is a modern princess. At first, they commune in secret but her daliances are discovered by Frederick and he attempts to separate them forcefully. A wonderful story although in German so subtitles are hopefully provided.

There are some hints of interesting historical stories in this film but it's main character is implausible, not at all sympathetic and the plot is not engaging enough to persuade this history geek from watching it all the way through. The battle scenes are ludicrous - anyone with a passing familiarity with the wars depicted should look away when they come on. The whole thing is punctuated by music that sounds like it comes from the kids serials we used to get in the 60s and 70s. Positives? The costumes.
