This novel examines the relationship of two brothers as one begins to experiment with blues music and sounds generated in African American communities in search of his own sound. The other is more interested in preserving his "Christian way of life" and preventing the advance of desegregation which pushes him into the arms of the Ku Klux Klan. The novel also examines the way racism is passed down from generation to generation from the brothers' relationship with their father to a cameo appearance by big Jesse Helms and his young son, future U.S. Senator Jesse Helms, Jr.
Even more, this novel, for me, examines change. In many novels that examine racial relations and tensions, there seems to be a trend of "once a racist, always a racist". On Trembling Ground, instead puts forth that a man can and, in a few cases does, change his views toward the idea of race.
In addition, Newell is completely believable writing in the voice of an aspiring white rock and roll guitarist, a virulent racist, and even an African American man caught in the middle of the brothers' struggle.
In the end, this is a fantastically well written an conceived book and I cannot recommend it highly enough.
