I'm 6'2" and have just recently bought my second Typhoon poncho.
Hiking traits.
I dislike thick/bulky gortex jackets for reasons I won't get into. The next best thing for me is a lightweight tape sealed seam topshell. Drawback to the tape sealed seam is that any prolonged hiking means shoulder wear (backpack straps). This annihilates the seal on the shoulder area which is no problem...until it buckets down.
Poncho highlights
The poncho has a Velcro flap covering a vertical zipper at the neck area which can be opened for ventilation. A horizontal zipper is also placed at the back hump area to encase excess material if you are not using a backpack. The hood has a soft but efficient two inch deep visor. There's also an elastic cord in the hood to pull it tight around your face.
Cons
In high altitude windy elevations, the poncho can be hard to put on at first. After practice it's not a problem.
Mess around with the rear zipper too much and it might be the first to go. It does have a very short redundant weather flap over the zipper, but after many (many) miles I ended up sealing the zipper in the open position with silicone. Not a problem as I always use a backpack.
At high altitude the wind can grab the poncho like a kite. If on precarious trails, tie a cord around your waist unless you want to mimic Mary Poppins.
Pros
You do not get worn shoulder seams as with regular tops/jackets
I never got sweaty in my last poncho, it has such great ventilation. Then when it gets too cold, I just tie a cord around my waist to keep the heat in.
On a minute's notice I can don the poncho without removing my backpack first.
It covers the entire backpack and near full body length.

Poncho has been used today & it's excellent. Quick to put on, goes over a rucksack ( don't need separate cover for the rucksack)popper between legs stops the wind blowing it up......does exactly what you'd expect it to....keeps you dry!!

I bought this poncho ahead of going to this year's Isle of Wight festival because I, unlike the organisers apparently could see the writing on the wall, weather wise. :-)

Thursday brought the first test for the poncho and after some standing around in the rain, I noticed that the fleece I was wearing under the poncho had become damp. I put this down to condensation and didn't worry about it.

On returning home, I decided to find out once and for all whether the claims of waterproofness were true. I got into the shower wearing the poncho with a t shirt underneath. After 5 mins of letting the shower water hit my shoulders and chest (rotating slowly under the shower jet), I turned off the shower and removed the poncho. My shirt was soaked right across the shoulders and down the chest. My conclusion: this poncho appears to let water in wherever it's actually in contact with your body after short exposure to water.

If you want a "shower proof" cape then maybe buy this. If you're looking for ACTUAL waterproofness, look elsewhere.

Paul

The poncho is well made with some clever features like the extra 'hunchback' space for covering backpacks, and the press stud to keep front and back tagged together between your legs.
I'm pretty tall (about 6') and this poncho fell to about shin length on me which meant when we went to Iguacu Falls all bar the tops of my boots were dry -fab!

im 5'7 and this water proof with knee high gaiters covers all!

If you need to draw the material in, you could use stick on velcro, or sow and then water proof stiches.

Great easy to throw on, light weight and warm, with plenty of ventilation so you don't get wet on the inside. :)

I bought this in August 2010 for my trip to the south west coast path.I'M NOT GOING TO DESCRIBE THE ITEM as this can be obtained either from the item description or the many reviewers.I had trouble putting it on with my ruck-sac in place for the first time and subsequent times. I've found that the best way (FOR ME )that is is to put it over the sac first and then put on the ruck-sac.I have used this item many times and must admit that I have had to reproof it at various times since. It weighs next to nothing and takes up very little space and goes everywhere with me.Providing me with shelter when I want to stop and have a coffee in the rain,or provides me with shelter while I want to continue walking in the rain.I haven't experienced very heavy or constant heavy rain and therefore I won't pretend that it kept me dry in all sorts of wet weather,BUT FOR ME IT DOES WHAT I WANT IT TO DO and I am very satisfied and I have used it for more than two years.

this item is OK. It will certainly keep you dry, which I suppose is the name of the game really, but I have a number of problems with this item which I did not anticipate despite giving a lot of thought before buying it. The main problem for me is that unlike many other ponchos, this one is STIFLING inside, it is extremely hot and the air just can't escape at all. I prefer the ponchos that are open on the sides, this doesn't affect the dryness but it MUCH more comfortable in terms of the circulation of air. For this item, i think the quality is reasonable, but the price is too high relative to the quality of the item. I have purchased an alternative poncho which is slightly less quality but significantly less in price, which I think is a more reasonable deal. Also another note - some ponchos have ringlets that you can attach carabiners or ropes to, so that you can use the poncho as a tarpaulin for camping, if you wish. This item does not have such a feature - so it is a poncho and nothing else. I should say that the hump back does work pretty well, and it does keep your bag dry, however the poncho itself is very uncomfortable.
