In September 2009 I've been to Gokyo, Base Camp - Kalapattar and Chhukung, and since I was trekking alone, without guide or porter, I had the chance to check out most of the book. I found out that the directions are spot-on, and the maps almost dumb proof: the book is as good as a real guide, or even better.

The general info and Kathmandu chapters are good, but may be found on other guidebooks as well. The real highlights are the detailed walking routes and maps for the Khumbu area above Lukla. Everything was right there as detailed in the book, and following the indications I had a safe and easy trek.

If you go for independent trekking, either camping or lodge/teahouse, this book is really priceless: It's a great help planning your trek, and it's all what you need to go trekking on your own - in Kathmandu you just can get a bigger map of the Khumbu area and you're ready to go.

You may not need the book if you hire a guide: a good one will lead you on the right trail - which is impossible to miss, anyway - and tell you all what you need to know, but it is still helpful to know exactly where you are, and your options for an afternoon walk or a different viewpoint here and there, plus many other info and data about everything around there.

So, the bottom line is: find a place for this book in your backpack!

I've just come back from a month trekking round the Khumbu region and this book was about the only source we used for information apart from one of the "Everest Region" maps available. The book gives you a ton of useful information on everything from tea houses to sherpas and porters whilst also describing the facilities available in all the towns and villages around the region and estimated trekking times. It's a phenomenal part of the world and this book is just as good!

This has been to Everest Base Camp with me - the only guidebook I've ever brought on holiday and actually used!.Gave my copy to another trekker before leaving Nepal and bought another recently as I'll be returning to Nepal soon. Superb wealth of information by an expert. Don't go without it!

Great guidebook to trekking in the Everest region especially if you are going out there without guides as this book arms you with heaps of information. I found it great to plan a trip in advance and then when out there we had it on hand every day to refer to details such as route directions, interesting side trips and places to stay. What it is particularly good for though is giving information on the more adventurous trips other than up to Everest base camp, such as the Kongma La, Cho La and Renjo La high passes.

The hand drawn maps with timings on the side bars work brilliantly too. Recommended if you are even thinking of going out to Everest region.

This is a very useful addition to the many books about walking in the Everest region. The book includes walks not found in any great detail in others, and has clearly been written by someone who not only knows the area but has also walked it. Most important the book is upto date, and includes information not found elsewhere. Having walked some of the trails in Nepal I would consider that this is worth putting in any backpack.
