Product Description

(Throughout his life three interests were all-absorbing to Edward Pinto: history, wood and craftsmanship, especially craftsmanship in wood. This great book is a compound of all three. It is a major product of the author's life's work, embodying a great part of his exceptional, perhaps unique, knowledge. It illustrates most aspects of the woodworker's craft from the Middle Ages
almost to the present day and, at the same time, social life and customs throughout that period from the humble activities of kitchen, school and
nursery to the techniques of trades and professions and the changing fashion scene. The book has been designed for easy reference under 28 main headings, each beginning with an historical introduction and then describing the objects so far as possible in alphabetical order. Some 3300 objects are illustrated in the photographs most of which were specially taken for the book. To make the book as comprehensive as possible some subjects made partly of metal are included.

Though, naturally, objects from the British Isles predominate, there are a great number from Continental Europe and also some of European origin made in, or exported from, Europe to the U.S.A., Canada, Australia, South Africa and other
countries where culture derives from Europe. The objects range in size from a carved peachstone to a wooden fire-engine, in subject from lace bobbins to a ship's figurehead, in quality from a simple trencher to the Carolean lignum vitae and ivory wassail bowl suite in the collection of Lord Cullen of Ashbourne)

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Tome of Treen 12 Jan. 2009
By J. Sampson - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Horribly hard to find and super expensive when you do. But this is a work of a life time. Nearly a complete guide to treen and woodenware. Cover the Old Country and the early USA. An indepth guide. Very scholarly and detailed. The history of many things now considered passe are incredible. The only thing that I don't like are the b/w photos. But this was coming from a time when color illustration was just not available. A must for the serious appraiser or someone who deals with high end woodenware.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as expected 20 Jan. 2014
By Harvey Kornberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
It is the most famous book on the subject, but it was really not as good as I had expected. The photos are small and dark and often not on the subject of Treen.
The condition of the book was excellent and the delivery was very fast. I would give and excellent rating to the seller.

I am a woodturner, and this book is an incredible resource for historical turned objects. It is a wealth of inspiration for new things to make. This book is something I've wanted for years, and finally bought it as a birthday present for myself!

By Michael A. Hagstad - Published on Amazon.com

This is the most authoritative and comprehensive book on treen. Good condition. And reasonable time to delivery.
The price is what I liked best. Some copies of this book go for $200. Good deal.
