Very occasionally there comes along a book that deserves more than 5 stars and this is one of them. Not surprisingly it is from one of Britains major institutions who seem to have cornered the market in books of excellence.
The Natural History Museum has 70million specamins, one million plus books and half a million artworks from which examples from 6 categories have been chosen for inclusion in this book for 3 main reasons-scientific importance, striking beauty or there is an interesting story to tell.Examples from the
6 categories are a)library, with its oldest book printed in 1469 b)botany ,the Banks collection c)palaeontology, the rhodesian man,d)entomology, the butterfly collection of Alfred Wallace e)zoology, Sloanes nautilus shell and f)minerology, the Indian sapphire ornament.
All articles are well researched ,written and illustrated.
A book to be highly recommended.

Great book - bought for research purposes and i've actually found myself getting off the bookshelf multiple times to look things up, show people or remind myself of things - very cool and inspiring!

I will have to cope with the spots on the front cover, but hey, no complaints when the item is described as 'used, very good' and I could buy it for half of the price of the museum shop :-)
