About the Author

Robert Louis Stevenson was born in 1850. He withdrew from engineering at Edinburgh University in favor of studying law. Although he passed the bar and became an advocate in 1875, he knew that his true work was as a writer. Between 1876 and his death in 1894, Stevenson wrote prolifically. His published essays, short stories, fiction, travel books, plays, letters, and poetry number in dozens. The most famous of his works include "Travels With A Donkey in the Cevennes," "New Arabian Nights," "The Strange Case of Doctor Jekyll and Mr Hyde," "Thrawn Janet," and "Kidnapped."

Such is the enduring appeal of Treasure island, that there seems to be few people who have not heard of either the story or some of the principal characters, Long John Silver being the best known. Although forming part of the BBC's range of children's audio dramatisations, this BBC radio full cast dramatisation, does not attempt to dilute the somtimes harsh nature of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story. This may make it unsuitable for younger children, but it has, in my experience, wide family and age appeal, as i bought this on cassette, long before it became available on CD. All the classic scenes and characters are well presented here - Jim Hawkins and the Admiral Benbow inn. The visit of Billy Bones with his sea chest containing the map of treasure island. The visit of the sinister, Blind Pugh, The assault on the inn by the buccaneer's. The voyage is planned. Squire Trelawney, Dr Livesy, Captain Smollett and Long John Silver with his parrot, Captain Flint. The voyage. Jim Hawkin's overhears the mutiny plot whilst hiding in the apple barrel. Treasure island. The fight for the stockade. The treasure and Ben Gunn, the strange man of the island. This 1995 production has all the hallmarks of the best BBC radio dramatisations, with fine voice casting and sound effects. Some of the voice hilights include - Buster Merryfield (from tv's, Only fools and horses) is excellent in the role of Billy Bones. Ben Gunn's character is played with wonderful eccentricity. Long John Silver's character is played with a superb blend of murderous menace and friendly charm. In the island scenes, the atmosphere of the island and the tension between the rivals is well portrayed. The whole production has atmosphere and is a good example of how the sound world of an audio dramatisation can bring a classic story to life.

A great retelling of a classic story which kept my husband and I, and our 8 and 6 year old sons, happily entertained on a couple of long car journeys.

Both my 10 year old son and I found it hard to follow the action on audio, remembering which groups/characters were where at any moment. I found the squire and the doctor slightly unconvincing.

Probably best watching this as a film or reading the book

Sound quality not the best, had to turn it up to full volume almost in car to get a better and clearer sound. Seemed like actors were eating their words and mumbling at times. I have good hearing so not me.

Loved it. Jack Shepherd is fabulous as Silver. Stays loyal to the book. Evokes the atmosphere and the character of the novel.

I bought this for my 8 year sold son who had developed and interest in the story line but isn't ready to tackled the whole book. He really likes the fact that it is not just another story tape. It has a full cast recording and great music and sound effects. We would both recommend it.

Bought for my husband to listen in the car as he doesn't get much time to read, he has only given 3 stars as he would have preferred it read from the book and not dramatised but I couldn't find another version however if you do like dramatised versions of books or it's for a child it would be a good introduction and could inspire them to go on and find time to read the book - as it has my husband!

MOSTLY BECAUSE THE NARATORE/ACTORS DIDN'T CONNECT UP WITH MY IMAGINATION. ALSO THERE WAS TOO MUCH BACKGROUND NOISE. i KNOW WE WANT ATMOSPHERE BUT NOT AT THE EXPENCE OF FOLLOWING THE STORY

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT
