I heard this album at the home of a school friend 1959 shortly after it was first released. The sound was unlike any other I had heard before. My paper round money didn't support the purchase of vinyl LP's and by the time I could afford such luxuries it was no longer available. Over the years, which saw the transitions from vinyl to tape to CD and now digital downloads I occasionally tried to find a copy but without success.
Delighted that a formative moment in my enjoyment of Jazz is again available.

Ever since hearing Jimmy Giuffre at Newport on Jazz on a Summer's Day I wanted to hear more. This is vintage Giuffre with a wonderful recording of Picken Em Up and Layin Em Down, not to mention other great tracks. Absolutely love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Prepare to have preconceptions challenged... and prepare to swing. 28 Feb. 2013
By tick tock - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Giuffre's innovations in trio work go far beyond what Mulligan and Baker had in mind in the early fifties. Bass, drums, and piano are thrown out altogether, with valve trombone and guitar taking up rhythmic/walking duties, producing a sound that few were prepared for when these records hit the shelves. The result is a swinging date that burns with capricious wit and unusual intensity. These guys have a rapport that has to be heard to be believed. Not to be missed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure genius 23 Nov. 2014
By Paul Miller - Published on Amazon.com

It may be old and out of date and certainly not the hyper chops multiculti style favored today, but it is, in every sense of the word, pure genius. And dig the instrumentation---when's the last time you heard something without a drummer playing an endless behind-the-horns solo?
