It's a childhood friends to lovers story, but Aimee is the townee and Kes is the circus boy. They are together for two weeks every year, their affection growing to love - and lust - as each year passes. Their lives are so different, but they're so good
Although the plot and setting is completely different, this story reminds me of this author's 'The education of Sebastian' and its sequel' The Education of Caroline' which are amongst my most favourite reads ever, so I was so pleased to find that rare chemistry, romance and happy feels those books stirred up for me coming together in this too.
I didn't love how this one ended, it actually tore me up, but its saving grace was that I recall feeling exactly the same way at the end of 'Sebastian', so I'm pulling on my big girl panties and being grateful that I get more Aimee and Kes in the second and final book this spring.
This is highly recommended and if you love 'The Education of Sebastian/Caroline' then you'll definitely love this one.
The fact that we didn't get a concluded story and it's going to be concluded in a second knocked it down a half star... but I'm going to go buy it right away to see how they get their HAE.
In particular, the first half were we meet Kes and Aimie at 10 and follow their annual meetings as the carnival comes to town is incredibly well written. The language was so evocative and drew me into the carnie life.
This book is sweet, funny, sexy and emotional - everything you could want in a romance book.
5 GIGANTICLY LARGE STARS FROM ME....along with a well deserved round of applause for Jane Harvey-Berrick for bringing us this gem of a book.
This is the third book by Jane that I've read and she writes feelings so well. She tugs at your heart. Not just the love type or I want to rip your clothes of kind of feelings but also the feelings of excitement of anticipation of disappointment of wonder.
"Time seemed to slow down, then spin backwards, loop around a few times and crawl across the face of the kitchen clock, mocking me every second as the blue hands stuttered and hesitated."
"The whole night was a wordless, desperate need to keep touching. Touching, arousing, caressing, moving, floating, tensing and softening. It was a conversation with our bodies: pauses and questions, answers and responses. Question: If I touch you like this? Answer: Yes, I'll fall a little bit further."
In my head I can see the bright lights and the colours, I can smell the hot dogs and the candy floss. The pictures conjured by the words so bright and clear.
But a life on the road? No roots. No stability - my heart was aching for Aimee. I couldn't do it.
"If love isn't enough, then what is?" "Fine! I'll tell you: having enough food to eat, having a roof over your head, having a means to earn money. You need all of that before love has a chance. Love doesn't feed you or keep you warm - it withers and dies when you have to get practical." "But if you have all those things without love, what's the point?"
Oh, oh, oh and cue the tears.
The reviews for this book had been mocking me to read it for ages but it was the cover reveal for the Traveling Woman that made me click. So glad that I don't have to wait for the sequel to be published. Getting it in a magical heartbeat.
The characters were a perfect blend. Coming from different lifestyles, Kes and Aimee meet when they are 10 and Aimee visits a travelling carnival and gets pulled away by a boy who captures her heart forever. Despite her parent's wishes for her not to spend time with the carnies, Aimee spends every moment she can with Kes and every year when he visits, they teach each other more about their lives
As expected, life isn't easy for these two and their backgrounds don't blend together easily but we follow their story with bated breath hoping that they can find a way to find happiness in each other's arms.
This is a sweet, tender love story. It's warms your heart and gives you hope that true love can find a way to overcome all that life throws at it.
As this is a two part story book 1 does end on a cliffie but never fear, the next instalment isn't far away. I can't wait to read the conclusion and to see what challenges life throws at Kes and Aimee next.
