The Product 4/5:
It has been a great little bottle that has been extremely useful when traveling through Central and South America. Since in 90% of places you can't drink the tap water, you can have easily accessible drinking water 24/7. This was especially useful when it was reasonably late at night and no shops or places are open to buy water from.
The only issue I had was the water bottle started leaking slightly when it wasn't upright which was annoying as it meant I couldn't put it in my bag.
However this brings me onto 2)
Customer Service 6/5:
Once I realised it started to leak I emailed drinksafe-systems and told them of the situation. They said they would immediately send out both a replacement parts and a new bottle in case the replacement leaked again to an address that I would be at least 2 weeks in advanced (to allow for the long travel). I thought this was great but had a bit of an issue as when you are backpacking you often don't know where you are going to be in 1 weeks time let alone 2!
Eventually I realised because of a flight I would be in Colombia in 2 weeks time so gave them notice and got an email very quickly after saying they have dispatched the parts. I turn up at the hostel and the package isn't there and I move on and tell the hostel to email me when it arrives. I get an email 6 weeks after drinksafe posted it saying it had finally arrived. Colombian post is clearly not very reliable.
So I then think all hope is lost but then remember I am visiting Australia next and tell drinksafe and then they immediately send the same items again to the aussie address.
I turn up in Aus and of course the items are there waiting for me. I thank drinksafe and leave this review and continue to enjoy my travels not having to worry about buying bottled water.
GREAT customer service and I will definitely be using them again should I need any of their products ever again.
Also a really big let down because I want to make sure this company and their products are successful.
That said here are the pros:
Easy to sip water out of but also easy to get water out for cooking or washing a minor scrape.
Cheaper than a lot of less effective options.
Incredible customer service (I ordered the pull top by mistake and they sent me the flip top despite the fact that it was my mistake)
I will keep using mine but I'll have to wrap the top in something when in transit.
I cannot comment on the volume throughput of the filter before replacement is required. Some reviewers indicate that this is well below the 1600 litres claimed - if this is the case then some of the more expensive systems may in fact be cheaper in the long run, however as an entry level system it was affordable at around £35 and using it on maybe 20 weekends a year for say 5litres of water filtration that will give me 16 years use - that sounds pretty good value to me. Even if it only lasts half that time, no doubt technology will have moved on by the time I need to either get a new filter, or replace it. Either way, this seems a decent bit of kit and well worth the money if it is going to keep my drinking water of a safe quality. It also means, so long as I know I can find some kind of water en route, I can carry much less weight of water to start off with on a hot day, thus travelling lighter overall. Just realise, this only filters biological contaminants and limited chemical contamination, so you can't expect to get drinking water from salt contaminated water or radioactivity contaminated water - this might sound strange, but I happen to know that Strontian is a village in Scotland near where the element Strontium was first discovered and according to Wikipedia one of it's naturally occurring isotopes (albeit a small proportion) is radioactive, so my guess is that drinking from a stream round there (which I did inadvertently do once!), might not be totally wise, even with the drinksafe system. However those risks aside, which no protable system will be able to help you with, I can recommend this product.
