The topics are a bit too easy in places, but I think it covers the "pass/fail" topics very well. You need to be able to give quick 30-second answers for these topics, so you can move on to the questions where you can really start scoring points. The answers given here will help you refine this skill.
Essential tip: read this book along with a revision buddy. If you are testing yourself, it is all too easy to fool yourself into thinking 'I would have said that'. It's best for this buddy to be another trainee, as they will understand the nuances of an almost-correct answer, but it doesn't really matter who you work with: my wife acted as a very patient examiner on a number of occasions when I was revising at home, and caught me out on a number of waffly answers.
Another tip is that if you really have to revise alone, get a dictaphone (the same one you use in clinic), and record yourself answering the questions out loud. When you play it back, you will be shocked by how much room there is for improvement.
The FRCS viva course is an excellent course but impossible to get on. I didn't go on ANY courses. Not one. I used this book as a target and it is basically aimed mid to high range for the exam. If you know EVERYTHING ie every word in here you will be very comfortable and if you use it as a coat hanger on which to add a few more snippets and papers as you wish (which are not essential but for prize winning types) then you will smash the exam.
I can't praise the book enough, the authors are the best in their fields at present.
It is a small price to pay compared to the exam and to the courses out there.
