Good God, I love these gritty East End dramas.
Both Kimberley Chambers and Martina Cole are huge guilty pleasures of mine. I read The Feud series by Kimberley Chambers last year and against my better judgement, fell completely in love with Eddie Mitchell. Consequently, I almost couldn't contain myself when I saw that Chambers had written another series that centres around a villainous East End family. The family in question in The Trap was the Butlers.
The Butlers are ruled by their matriarch, Queenie, and her sister, Vivian. Queenie has three sons that are all involved in organised crime and intimidation; Vinny, Roy and Michael. Vinny is the real bad seed of the family (although admittedly, he is also the brains of the whole operation) and through violence, influence and manipulation, manages to get the entire family to do as he says. He was a really nasty piece of work. Eddie Mitchell from The Feud was no angel but he adored his wife and worshipped the ground that she walked on. Vinny Butler had no such redeeming feature.
The Trap follows the lives of the Butlers over a ten year period, documenting deaths, marriages, children and family disputes. Due to the fact that they are such a dysfunctional family they were absolutely fascinating to read about, although I must say that I struggled to warm to the characters in a way that I have managed to do in other novels by Kimberley Chambers. The Butlers really lacked the likeability factor and were more sociopaths than devious but lovable rogues. That being said, Michael, the youngest Butler boy, seemed to be a better man than the lot of them put together and the relationship between him and Nancy started out as something that was really quite lovely to read about. My fingers are crossed for him and Nancy in the later books.
Once again, Kimberley Chambers has managed to pull me in to this dark and gritty world with her fast-paced writing, complex characters and action-packed story. I always try to pace myself with her books but I'm just not able to do it. Her books are so darn addictive..
Overall, I would have to give The Trap 4.5 stars due to its excellent story and brilliant characters. Kimberley Chambers really knows how to create a great villain! The only thing that stopped this book being 5 stars for me was the fact that I struggled to like the Butlers and consequently felt very little sympathy for them when anything went wrong. However, I doubt that you're actually usually meant to like the violent and immoral gangsters that dominated the East End so in that respect, maybe she got it spot on this time?
A gripping and suspenseful read with all of the violence, sex, money, love and family that you could ever want, all crammed in to one book.
4.5 Stars ****+
