This film really is a bit of a mishmash. It is a comedy horror, although there was little of the first and none of the second. It tries so hard and throws everything at you, with the result that you will sit there wondering what on earth is going on. The writer/director, Rudy De Luca, has been involved as a writer on several Mel Brooks films but this definitely a pale imitation.

Jeff Goldblum and Ed Begley Jr. are reporters who are sent to Transylvania to route out a Frankenstein story for their tabloid paper. The problem is that the village is really nice, the people pleasant and they just get laughed at when they explain their mission. Over time, however, they gradually discover that things are not as they seem. The mayor and the chief of police have something to hide and what exactly is going on in the cellars of the old castle?

You will certainly get your value for money if it is counted in monsters. There is Frankenstein's monster, the wolfman, vampira, a mummy and various other oddities. There are also several really irritating oddball characters, such as the butler and his wife, and a porter who keep cropping up to do inane "comedy" routines that have nothing to do with the plot, such as it exists. The problem is that this is all just thrown together and by the mid point in the film, everyone seems to be running around chasing everyone else for no discernible reason.

I enjoyed the film in parts and was just about happy to have seen it. Gena Davies as Odette, the vampira character is really sexy. If they had only simplified the plot and got the actors to play it with less slapstick, I think it would have been better film. Not great but certainly a lot better.

When my parents first bought a reconditioned top loading VCR in the late eighties, the video store had four films to rent; Legend, Driller Killer, The Magic Toyshop and Transylvania 65000. My views on the film might be slightly clouded by the fact that I watched this film approximately once a week for 3 years. It is worth buying for the Butler/Doll scene alone. There's also a brilliant slipping-on-a-banana gag. I would recommend it highly. My Dad doesn't laugh at many films but he was streaming with tears and bogeys at this one (once a week for 3 years).

I love this movie, I was very young when I first watched it on VHS. And I used to watch it over and over again.
Then when I was thinking about movies from my youth that I would like to own on DVD as an adult, this was number 1.
It's a proper comedy, no rubbishy love story, no gross out comedy, no bromance - just fun and a good laugh.
