As an introduction to translation stidues this is a reasonable and short read. Unfortunately the author's commentaries are exclusively from the standpoint of literary translation, especially of poetry, which leads IMO to a lack of balance in relation to the translator's everyday work. The text is also peppered with references to -isms of various sorts. (I switched off in the places where it spoke about the relation of translation to post-colonialism - there's cultural bias for you!) These tend to make it come across as rather pretentious to those whose approach to linguistics has been via a more scientific route. Munday's introuction to translation Studies is IMO much better.
