Speedtest using USBDeview:
Write Speed: 17.72 MB/Sec
Read Speed: 80.00 MB/Sec
Speedtest using CrystalDiskMark (5 test runs, 1,000MB test size):
Write Speed: 19.66 MB/Sec
Read Speed: 85.27 MB/Sec
It's advertised as being 'Up to 70MB/S Read, 18MB/S Write' - so not bad!
Till now that is. I am very pleased with the performance of this memory-stick. Although USB 3.0, everything I'm running it on is USB 2.0, so I cannot test it to its full potential. Suffice it to say that even with a slow 5400rpm hard drive (another bottle-neck) it flies in comparison to what I've been using up to now. It also checks out as being a genuine Transcend device from the Transcend web-site.
So yes, I'm very pleased with it.
I was way too kind to this USB memory-stick in my original review. Having used it extensively now, I'm sad to report that it's FAR slower than I had originally thought. It can be read quickly enough - between 25-30MB/s - but its write-speed is abysmal - a miserable 6-7MB/s(max!). This is faster than anything I had prior to buying it, but compared to what's now available, it doesn't make the grade. Having just bought another Transcend memory product, a class-10 32GB microSD card, the compare & contrast is striking - it reads at 30MB/s and writes at 13.5MB/s, so almost twice as fast writing, and for less money! IMO the "USB 3.0" advertising-blurb is a bit of a red-herring - what good is having a super-fast interface if the memory being written to is dead slow? I wouldn't be surprised on cracking it open to find a class-6 memory card inside! Not recommended, especially when there are memory-cards now available that are both cheaper and (far) faster.
Being a USB 3.0 device, the data transfer speed is very high as advertised: around 80MB/s sequential read; 17MB/s sequential write for a test data of 1000MB. I used CrystalDiskMark v3 as a test program and my results agree with values shown by another reviewer (dated 2013-09-16).
I usually use such high capacity flash drives for storing operating system images (to restore OS image when required) and with ever growing applications and data sizes, in some instances a 16GB flash memory may not provide the capacity required for system installations using hefty applications such as Microsoft Visual Studio. I considered using Blu-ray disc (25GB capacity), but for a low-cost, a 32GB flash drive is a winner as it has no overheads/downsides such as need for optical drive, disc burning and storage space requirements associated with the disc media. I tested this flash drive with system restoration and the speed gain was significantly high in contrast to a 16GB USB 2.0 flash drive I have been using for quite some time. System restoration requires only read operation and the high read data transfer rate (as high as 80MB/s quoted for a sequential test) comes into play. In comparison, I could only achieve around 20 MB/s read transfer rate with a 16GB USB 2.0 flash drive!Read more ›
Not the last word in solid construction with the connector release button only needing a minimal press for the latch to disengage, (oddly enough the press down latch offers more of a resistance when trying to retract the connector than when preparing it for usage), but I guess it's not advertised as a robust drive.
Otherwise it compares favourably on capacity and speed when judged against other similarly priced items, plus comes with the limited lifetime warranty.
On the whole I have to say I'm impressed by the Transcend brand and the support software on offer.
After plugging it into a Windows 7 laptop and formatting the drive, the drive couldn't be recognised later by a Windows XP machine. Thought I had rendered the drive useless after the reformat/partition experiment, but this is where Transcend's OnlineRecovery software made light work of putting things right. A couple of minutes later, the drive is identified online and default settings re-applied via the Transcend site.
